The provision is good

Children experience close, warm relationships with the childminder and her assistant. Babies settle quickly when they first start at the setting. Children rapidly build strong bonds with the childminder and her assistant, which supports their learning, well-being and good behaviour. Children are happy. They receive praise and encouragement, which helps to promote good manners and respect for others. Children play and explore in a safe and secure environment. They are confident and independent learners. Children relish playing with the childminder, who fully engages in the activities children choose. She plays alongside children as they explore and investigate toys and resources. The childminder aims to provide an environment where children can thrive in their learning and development. All children learn the skills they need for the next stages of their development and the eventual move on to nursery and school. n The childminder provides suitable opportunities for children to be creative and to discover how things work. This was evident when children listened to nursery rhymes after selecting different buttons on the activity centre. They know that when you press a button, a song will play, which helps them to understand cause and effect. n Overall, the childminder has a good understanding of how children learn and

6 February 2020 develop. She plans a wide range of activities which are based on children's interests. She observes and assesses children in their play and uses their information to plan for further learning. However, the childminder does not consistently adapt teaching to follow children's interests and develop their skills as they play. n The childminder reflects on her practice. She has discussions with her assistant about how children are progressing and what improvements are required. She uses the feedback from her assistant to improve her provision. For example, storytelling resources now include various props, such as soft toys, which helps to bring the stories to life. However, the childminder does not explore fully the views of parents and children when evaluating the quality of her provision to help her to identify areas for further improvement. n The childminder and her assistant are both qualified and continue to increase

Her experience enables her to recognise signs and symptoms of possible abuse and neglect. In addition, the childminder has knowledge of wider safeguarding concerns and the 'Prevent' duty. The childminder knows who to contact and the action to take should she have concerns about a child's welfare. She completes risk assessments, which helps her to identify and minimise risks in order to promote children's safety. The childminder maintains a safe environment. She checks all areas of her home and assesses possible risks when she takes children on local outings.
