p.1

The provision is outstanding

Children flourish in this exceptionally nurturing environment. They form exceedingly close, caring relationships with the childminder and her assistant, and demonstrate that they feel extremely safe and happy. Children learn to be independent from an early age. They take responsibility for their own personal care and hygiene, such as wiping their noses and washing their hands, at appropriate times. The childminder offers a range of experiences to children, to prepare them for living in modern society. Children gain a secure understanding of differences between people, and what it is to be part of a community. For example, they visit elderly people in a nearby care home to sing songs. Children acquire valuable life skills while at the setting, which prepare them superbly for starting school. For example, older children confidently pour their own drinks from a water dispenser. When their younger peers struggle with this, they provide encouragement or step

in to help them. Children demonstrate curiosity, and have an eagerness to learn. They are highly motivated, and choose to participate in adult-led and child-initiated play. Children are confident in their knowledge, and thrive when being challenged. For instance, boys and girls of different ages concentrated and worked together as they completed a complex jigsaw puzzle.

This helps all children to achieve at the highest levels. n Support for children's learning is outstanding. The childminder and her assistant have high expectations of all children. They are inspiring teachers who make full use of opportunities to maximise children's learning. For example, they successfully use stories to provoke children's thinking on a wide range of issues, such as healthy eating and different types of families. They introduce children to an extensive range of words, and make skilful use of questioning to help children recall and use these new words in their play. This helps children to

consolidate their learning and continuously build on what they know. n The childminder meticulously plans highly creative and inspiring activities. These thoroughly engage all children, and successfully support their differing learning needs. For example, the childminder challenged children to free the toy penguins, which had been frozen in a block of ice. She provided a range of tools and resources with which children could use to explore and experiment. This sparked children's curiosity and kept them engaged as they tried out different ways to melt or crack the ice.

need to do better?

5 February 2020 n Children show a highly positive approach to learning, and become thoroughly engaged in their play. For instance, they concentrate for long periods as they use laces to create pictures and shapes. This helps to develop strength and coordination in their small muscles in readiness for learning to write. They enhance their mathematical development as they identify different shapes, such as a triangle, pentagon and square. n The childminder understands the significance of children's home lives and experiences. Partnerships with parents are excellent and play an extremely strong part in successfully meeting children's individual needs. The childminder successfully involves parents in their children's learning. Parents of children who speak English as an additional language say that their children's communication skills are flourishing in response to the childminder's teaching. n Children's behaviour is exemplary. They are kind and compassionate, and show
