p.1

The provision is good

The childminder provides a warm, friendly environment where children feel happy and safe. She develops close relationships with the children and she is responsive to their individual needs. Furthermore, children are constantly praised for their achievements and encouraged during activities. Children beam with delight at this recognition. This helps to promote confidence in their abilities and supports their emotional well-being.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder delivers a well-balanced curriculum and she is committed to providing the best-quality experiences for the children in her care. The childminder knows the children well. She gathers information about children's prior learning and achievements when they first start. She assesses their learning and plans activities and experiences that follow their interests. Activities that children engage in are stimulating and build on what they already know. They happily choose what they want to play with from a range of resources that are easily accessible to them. The childminder joins in with children's play, asks them appropriate questions to support their learning and listens to their responses.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder demonstrates good manners and is a positive role model. Children are well behaved, show curiosity and take time to explore.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder supports children to learn about the world around them and about differences between themselves and others. For example, children enjoy playing with small-world dolls that represent people from different cultural backgrounds and with differing abilities, such as people who use wheelchairs. Children go to play centres and nursery playgroups with the childminder, as well as spending time with a regular group of childminders and their minded children. This helps children's confidence and supports them to develop their social skills. n Early reading and writing skills are supported well. Children often visit the library and take books home. They show deep concentration as they confidently use their pencil to draw lines and colour in pictures. Children thoroughly enjoy listening to music and sing familiar songs and rhymes. They smile as they recognise the songs, join in and move in rhythm to the music.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder supports the children in developing their vocabulary effectively. She provides plenty of narration for what is happening. This means children get to hear lots of words. For example, the childminder uses descriptive words, such as 'mix', 'soft', 'smooth' and 'sticky', during a play-dough-making activity. Children who speak English as an additional language make rapid progress in their communication and language development. The childminder uses key words in their home language as well as in English.

p.2

need to do better?

29 January 2020 n Children are developing good mathematical skills. They have regular opportunities to learn about numbers, sizes and shapes through play. Children enjoy sorting toy animals, counting them and talking about which one is bigger or smaller. n The childminder supports children to learn about healthy lifestyles. For example, they choose and buy fruit and vegetables together at the local shops. Children enjoy regular physical activities in the fresh air. n The childminder teaches children good hygiene routines. For example, she encourages them to wash their hands before eating and she works in partnership with parents to support the children with toilet training. n The childminder has a positive approach to continuous improvement. She values feedback she receives from the local authority adviser and parents. The childminder endeavours to attend training events in order to further develop her

practice. For example, she has recently completed a course to enhance her communication with the fathers of the children in her care. However, the childminder does not always identify specific areas for development to continuously raise her knowledge and skills. n Partnerships with parents are good. The childminder keeps them well informed about their children's progress and shares how they have been throughout the day. n The childminder makes good links with pre-schools that children will attend. This helps to ensure a smooth transition to pre-school and supports children to be ready for their next stage of learning.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder has a clear understanding of the signs and symptoms of abuse and she knows the local procedures to follow should she have concerns about a child's welfare and well-being. She has flow charts and current contact numbers in place in order to seek advice if this should be required. The premises are secure and effective risk assessments are in place to keep children safe both indoors and during visits. The childminder keeps up to date with first-aid training and she supervises the children in her care vigilantly.
