p.1

The provision requires improvement

Children enjoy the time they spend with the childminder, who provides a warm, caring and safe environment. Older children are very confident. They approach visitors happily as they attempt to involve them in their games. Younger children who are less confident actively seek the childminder out for a cuddle and reassurance. They are supported well by the childminder as she provides them with time to become familiar with new situations and to settle in their own time. They demonstrate a strong relationship with her and are developing good relationships with their friends from a young age.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

Children develop some of the skills they need for their future learning. They use mathematical language and count in play situations. However, the childminder does not focus well enough on building up young children's vocabulary. The childminder's expectations of children do not consistently match their needs and level of development. Observations and assessments of children are not used effectively enough to track their progress and extend activities to support their learning. Children are offered a variety of activities. However, the childminder has yet to improve her knowledge of how to deliver a strong early years curriculum.

need to do better?

n The childminder has made progress since her last inspection. She has received support from her local authority adviser and has worked with them to implement ideas for improvements. She has attended training to extend her knowledge and help her to raise the quality of her provision. The childminder has a vision for the future. She recognises that she still has areas to improve to provide children with the best possible care and learning. n The quality of the children's education is not yet consistently good. Overall, the childminder interacts well with children and encourages their free choices in play. However, she does not consistently build on children's knowledge and skills, particularly when supporting children's language development. n The childminder assesses children's progress and introduces next steps for learning. However, she does not use information from her assessments of their progress effectively to ensure she plans challenging learning experiences.

p.2

need to do better?

Consequently, next steps are not always pertinent to what children need to learn, and activities do not consistently help children to reach their next steps and make good progress. n Partnerships with parents are good. The childminder shares information with parents about what their children have been doing during the day. She gains information from parents about their children's routines and preferences when children first start. She uses this information to help children to settle well. However, she does not gain information about what children already know and

need to do better?

28 January 2020 can do to inform her planning and support children's learning from the outset. Parents' comments are positive. Parents say that the childminder provides an inclusive environment, that children are 'happy' and 'safe' and 'they are very satisfied'. n Children build warm, trusting relationships and are well behaved. The childminder helps them to understand about the needs of others. For example, as younger children experiment to build a tower with the bricks, older children join in and share bricks. Children receive regular praise from the childminder, which helps to boost their self-esteem. n The childminder recognises when children are tired and hungry and meets their care needs well. She makes appropriate use of local toddler groups, where children socialise with others and enjoy sensory experiences. The childminder pays good attention to healthy eating and providing children with nutritious

snacks and fruit. n The childminder continually reflects on ways to improve her provision. For example, since the previous inspection, she has adapted medication administration records to maintain accuracy fully. The childminder values the views of parents and welcomes suggestions on how she can support their children further. n The childminder provides an inclusive service. She promotes equality, tolerance and acceptance. She helps children learn about similarities and differences between themselves and others. She talks to children about their personal features, family lives and the wider community.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder knows the signs and symptoms that may suggest a child is being abused or neglected. She attends training to keep her safeguarding knowledge up to date. This includes knowledge of wider safeguarding issues such as preventing children from being drawn into extreme circumstances. The childminder knows the procedures to follow and who to contact to report any concerns. The childminder's home is safe and secure. The childminder risk assesses all areas that children use, including the outdoor area, to ensure that children are able to play in a safe environment.
