p.1

The provision is good

The childminder creates an environment that is stimulating, safe and secure. Children are content and happy in the childminder's care. They are self-assured and show high levels of confidence in play. For example, children are curious and constantly busy, exploring toys and finding out how things work. They have a positive attitude to their learning and are well behaved.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder is enthusiastic and has high expectations for the children he cares for. He provides activities that are of interest to the children and promote their learning. For example, children enjoy rolling colourful balls to knock the skittles down. They are excited and wait in anticipation for the skittles to fall. The childminder extends their learning by asking them to identify the different colours of balls and to count the skittles as they drop. This helps to develop children's early mathematical skills.

p.2

The provision is good

Children enjoy listening to stories. They sit with the childminder and concentrate as he reads a story about pirates. They enjoy looking at the pictures and identifying the characters in the book. They repeat sounds that the pirate might make and use their imagination as they talk about treasure and sailing on a big ship.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder is ambitious and well focused. He reflects on his own practice and is proactive in making changes to improve the home to benefit children. For example, he has changed the layout of the playroom so that children can access the resources for themselves. The childminder attends mandatory training, such as first aid and safeguarding. However, he does not focus his professional development opportunities to help him consider raising his teaching to the highest level. n The childminder provides a well-planned curriculum. He follows children's interests and encourages learning through play. This is evident when he uses children's interest in cars. Children enjoy moving cars along the floor making 'brum, brum' sounds. The childminder fetches a car with a press button and demonstrates how to use it. The children are excited and learn how to make the car move using their early technology skills.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder knows the children well overall. He uses his assessments of children's achievements to help him provide for their individual development and future learning. However, he does not always find out enough information from parents about their children when they first begin attending. For example, what children are already capable of doing or their current experience. This means that he does not always plan individual experiences for children from the start. n Children have opportunities to play outside. For example, they visit local parks

23 January 2020 and run around in the garden. They have opportunities to climb and balance as they use the equipment, which helps develop their physical skills. However, the childminder has not expanded the range of outdoor experiences to support those children who learn best outdoors. n The childminder is highly skilled at supporting children to develop their communication and language skills. For example, he comments extensively on what children are doing and asks them questions to get them to think and respond. As a result, younger children become increasingly confident in expressing their views. n The childminder recognises the importance of helping children to develop their emotional and physical well-being. For example, he supports children to manage different emotions effectively and stay calm in challenging situations. This has a positive impact on the way children behave. Additionally, children learn to take

turns and share the resources they play with, to help develop their social skills. n The childminder follows consistent care practices that promote children's good health. This is illustrated as he talks to children about removing the germs from their hands as they wash them before lunch. Children learn to be self-sufficient and independent learners. For example, they take their own shoes and coats off and feed themselves their lunch. Children regularly walk around the community, where they learn about the local area. The childminder uses these opportunities to teach children about road safety, for example looking both ways and listening for cars.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder is aware of his responsibilities to keep children safe from harm. He has attended children protection training to update his knowledge about the wider issues of safeguarding children. He knows who to contact and what to do if he has a concern about a child in his care. The childminder understands the procedure to follow if there is an allegation made against him or a member of his household. Children's safety and welfare are given the highest priority. The childminder carries out robust checks every day to ensure the premises are secure and the play equipment is safe.

p.3

should:

n strengthen the partnerships with parents and find out about children's current experiences from home and what they know and can do, to help shape their future learning from when they first start n enhance learning opportunities in the outdoor area for children who prefer to learn outdoors

p.3

should:

23 January 2020 n seek further ways to enhance professional development to keep updated and informed, and to raise the quality of teaching and practice to an outstanding level.
