p.1

The provision is good

The childminder provides a calm and nurturing environment for children, who feel safe and emotionally secure. They are keen to explore the playroom and eagerly choose from a broad range of resources that keep them busy and interested in their learning. Outdoors, they love to kick the balls, climb the ladder and slide down the slide. Children take turns filling up the watering can to make a muddy puddle and jump in it, like their favourite cartoon pig.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder is a good role model for children's behaviour and teaches them how to take turns and share from a very early age, diffusing minor squabbles calmly. She keeps parents well informed about what their children have done during the day and the progress they are making. Parents are very positive about the childminder and acknowledge how she has helped their children to make good progress.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder works with children to help develop their confidence and independence ready for the next stage of their learning. For example, very young children are beginning to manage their personal care and confidently put their boots and coats on for outdoor play.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder provides a welcoming and inviting play environment for children, who settle quickly and are interested in their learning. Overall, the broad range of good-quality resources supports children in all areas of their learning. n Children make good progress in their learning and, overall, the childminder has good teaching skills. She knows each child well and monitors their progress effectively. She uses their individual interests to help move them on to the next stage of their learning. n At times, the childminder talks quickly and uses questions that only require a one-word answer. She misses opportunities to give children time to think, work things out and respond. n The childminder helps young children to manage their feelings and behave well. When a friend has a tumble outside, another child helps them up and gently rubs their back to reassure them. n The childminder evaluates her practice and has ongoing plans to improve what

she does. For example, she has plans to provide a sheltered area outdoors, to enable children to play and learn outside in all weathers. n Children thoroughly enjoy their time with the childminder. They learn to love books and stories, and the childminder uses this interest to extend their learning. For example, they use props to 'feed' the hungry caterpillar and laugh

3 February 2020 when the new butterfly emerges from its cocoon. The childminder then helps them to make links, by providing the same fruits the caterpillar ate at snack time. n Children love to play outside, and have good opportunities to do so. However, some of the play equipment is either too old for the children, or wet and muddy. The childminder has not assessed and prepared the area as well as possible to allow children the same choices they have indoors. n Children learn about keeping themselves clean and healthy from an early age. They wash their hands ready for snack and after playing in the garden. They learn about managing risks through play. For example, they understand that the oven will be hot and must not be touched by children. n The childminder uses regular opportunities for her professional development. She assesses the success of training and the impact on her practice. For example, training on schemas has enable her to extend children's learning

through observing their behaviours and interests. She meets regularly with colleagues to discuss practice and share ideas.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder has a secure knowledge and understanding of safeguarding matters. She updates her training on a regular basis to ensure she is up to date with any changes in legislation. The childminder understands how to recognise when a child may be at risk and is clear about how to refer any concerns. The childminder keeps her home safe and secure to ensure children can play and learn in safety. Even very young children are beginning to learn about their own safety. For example, they enjoy saying 'hello' to the pet rabbits, but know not to put their fingers through the cage.

p.3

should:

n give children sufficient time to think and respond to questions, providing better opportunities to extend their understanding and language skills n assess and prepare outdoor play more effectively to ensure children have access to the full range of resources and play opportunities outside.
