The provision requires improvement
Children enjoy their time in the childminder's care. They concentrate on activities for extended periods. That said, at times, these activities are not planned well enough. Activities do not always help children achieve the next steps in their learning, nor offer sufficient challenge where they are already meeting their expected levels of development. For example, children enjoy stacking blocks and then knocking their tower down. Although the children are having fun, the childminder does not extend this activity to help develop their skills and knowledge further. Consequently, children are not learning as much as they are capable of because the childminder does not set expectations high enough.
p.2
The provision requires improvement
Children benefit from warm relationships with the childminder and with each other. They demonstrate that they feel confident, safe and secure. Children behave very well. They play nicely together, take turns, share their toys and look after each other. During a number of themed activities, children are provided with a range of inviting and imaginative resources. They learn about different fruits and vegetables with the aid of colouring sheets and storybooks. However, the childminder misses many opportunities to use different words and a wider range of vocabulary when talking to children. This means that the development of children's speech and language is not fully supported.

need to do better?
n The childminder's assessments of children's progress are not accurate enough. This means that she is not always identifying potential gaps in children's learning and taking prompt action to reduce these. Additionally, she does not always recognise the areas where children require a greater level of challenge in order to reach their potential. Although the childminder plans activities that children enjoy, these are not focused precisely enough on what children need to learn next. n The childminder often misses opportunities to further develop and support children's speech and language skills. At times, she does not ask children questions that will encourage dialogue and conversation. Additionally, she does not always allow children enough time to respond to the questions she asks. Although the childminder is warm and friendly in her interactions with children, she does not consistently use these interactions effectively to model language

and to increase their vocabulary. n Children have strong attachments to the childminder, who is affectionate and attentive towards them. The childminder offers lots of praise and encouragement, particularly when children achieve or do something well. This inspires children to persist at activities and to stay focused. They play and learn in a relaxed atmosphere, where they can freely access toys and resources.

29 January 2020 n Parents express positive views about the childminder and the service she offers. They comment on the kind nature of the childminder, and state that their children are happy and safe. The childminder gets to know families well. She also shares some information with the other childcare settings that the children attend. n Since her last inspection, the childminder has sought out a number of training opportunities and completed a number of relevant courses. She has ensured that she has kept up to date with other mandatory training, such as paediatric first aid. The childminder communicates with other local childminders to share ideas. n The childminder promotes the good health and hygiene of children. They enjoy healthy snacks and are encouraged to try new foods. Children wash their hands at appropriate times throughout the day. n The childminder gathers some information from parents about the activities their

children do at home. She has started to consider how she might provide children with new experiences, for example a beach theme in the summer for children who have not had the opportunity to visit the seaside. However, the childminder has not yet fully considered how she might broaden and diversify the experiences of all the children in her care. n The childminder has a sufficient knowledge of the procedures she would follow if she had any safeguarding concerns. However, at times, she is less certain regarding the specific roles of the individuals she would contact if she had a concern. Although she has a basic knowledge of wider safeguarding issues such as the 'Prevent' duty, this could be increased further.
p.3
Safeguarding
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
p.3
Safeguarding
The childminder can identify the signs and symptoms that could indicate that a child was at risk of harm or abuse. Although her knowledge of wider safeguarding issues is sufficient, she would benefit from deepening her understanding of aspects such as the 'Prevent' duty and the different roles that individuals have in the safeguarding of children. The childminder takes appropriate action to minimise any risks in her home. Her premises, both indoors and outside, are safe and secure. The premises are kept clean and hygienic. Children enjoy having lots of safe space in which to play.
