p.1

The provision requires improvement

The childminder does not ensure the required adult-to-child ratios are met at all times. Children engage with the childminder and take part in the activities she offers them. However, in view of the number of children in her care, the childminder does not provide sufficient time for children to think and complete tasks that will help extend their learning to the highest levels.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

Children display a short attention span as they frequently move between different resources to play. The breach in the adult-to-child ratio means the childminder is unable to help children to persevere during activities in which they show an interest. For example, during the inspection, the childminder asked a child a question to extend their knowledge. However, the childminder was unable to listen to the answer, as her attention was needed to help resolve a minor tussle over a toy with two other children. The childminder is able to discuss children's learning and next steps, with her knowledge of the intent to deliver her curriculum and chosen resources. However, she is not able to implement a rich learning environment and meet the needs of all the children. The childminder does not consistently use what she knows about the children to tailor activities to their individual needs. At times, interactions with the children do not consistently model

language and build on their understanding enough, for instance, of colours, shapes and simple counting.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

Children's behaviour is age appropriate. They are content and enjoy their time in the childminder's home. The childminder reads with some children and encourages them to imitate the animal noises and identify the animal names, for example.

need to do better?

n The childminder does not ensure the required adult-to-child ratios are met at all times. n The childminder does not provide enough challenging activities and experiences for younger children to extend their learning and help them make consistently good progress. n At times, the childminder's teaching strategies are not fully effective. Her interactions with children do not always guide and develop their learning well enough. n The childminder does not offer younger children enough opportunities to make choices about what they want to play with and direct their own learning. Children do not have a wide range of opportunities to learn to be independent and complete tasks for themselves. n Self-evaluation is not used effectively to identify breaches in requirements and areas for improvement. However, the childminder keeps up to date with

29 January 2020 mandatory training and seeks further opportunities to develop her practice and further her knowledge. She regularly accesses online training and meets with local childminders to discuss new ideas for learning activities. n The childminder has positive relationships with parents. She shares information about children's daily care routines and activities they have taken part in, to help support parents in continuing their children's learning at home. n Children are happy in the childminder's home. They are developing some skills needed for their future learning. For example, children learn appropriate hygiene routines, and are supported to wash their hands at appropriate times, such as mealtimes. n The childminder supports children who speak English as an additional language. For example, children have opportunities to hear and use their home language. This supports children to represent and value their identity.

p.2

need to do better?

n Children are happy and they form close attachments to the childminder. Parents leave testimonials to say that they are happy with the level of care provided by the childminder and that she knows their children's needs. n The childminder acts as a positive role model to children. She uses good manners for them to copy and learn. n Children learn about the world beyond their immediate experiences successfully. This helps them to develop an understanding and respect for those who are different from themselves.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder understands the procedures she would follow if she had concerns about a child's welfare. Safeguarding policies and procedures are implemented effectively. The childminder uses these to underpin her knowledge and practice, to protect children from harm. Regular training on wider safeguarding issues, such as the 'Prevent' duty, enables her to safeguard children from extreme views and behaviours, including female genital mutilation. While the childminder completes risk assessments these do not reflect the increased number of children in her care and the breach in adult-to-child ratios.
