p.1

The provision is good

The childminder offers a safe, caring and supportive environment for children. She has high expectations for children's behaviour and teaches them to be polite and kind. Children behave very well. They play happily together and show consideration for others. They demonstrate this when they find a child's cup and hand it to them so they can enjoy their drinks together. The childminder offers interesting experiences across the curriculum. Children have fun, for instance, when they complete jigsaws and play with the wooden house. However, the childminder recognises that she can do more to help to expand children's creative skills.

p.2

The provision is good

All outings take place on foot or using public transport. This benefits children's health and promotes their understanding of the world. Children attend playgroups and enjoy activities at the library. This enables them to mix with other children and develop their social skills. Children visit the childminder's allotment, communal field and orchard. Here, they spot a variety of wildlife and grow a range of fresh produce. This enables them to eat food that they may not have tried before. They also learn important lessons, for instance, about how things grow but may not survive.

need to do better?

n The well-qualified childminder is a member of the local childminding network. She attends regular meetings to hear key messages and share good practice with other childminders. This helps her to keep up to date and well informed. The childminder reflects on her practice and considers parents' views to help her improve. n The childminder uses what she knows about children's needs and interests to help her decide what they need to learn next. If children need extra help, such as with their speech, she works closely with parents to make sure children receive the support they need. n Children enjoy sharing books with the childminder. They take turns to lift the flaps and feel the texture of objects. The childminder offers clear explanations to help children build their knowledge and vocabulary. For example, she tells children that otters live in water and a baby sheep is called a lamb. n Children show excitement when they play with dough. They learn how to squash

and squeeze and use tools, such as rollers and shape cutters. This helps children to develop their small-muscle skills. n The childminder engages children in pretend play with dolls. However, she does not consistently plan enough activities to fully promote children's creativity. This means children have few opportunities to sing songs, dance and explore using a range of different materials. n Attachments between the childminder and children are strong. This is evident

need to do better?

21 January 2020 when children follow the childminder if she leaves the room and when they sit on her lap for a cuddle. Children are settled, comfortable and well cared for. n Daily routines help children to understand how to keep themselves healthy and safe. Children eat fresh fruit with their lunch. They remember that they need to use soap to wash their hands. Children learn about risks. They know they must not run out of the front gate onto the busy main road. n The childminder demonstrates respectful behaviour for children to copy. She teaches children not to interrupt when people are talking. Children are well mannered. For example, when the childminder thanks them for being helpful and they politely reply, 'You're welcome'. n Relationships with parents are strong. Parents report that children flourish in the childminder's care. They say the childminder keeps them well informed. For example, parents know the childminder is encouraging children's independence.

p.2

need to do better?

They speak positively about how this is helping children to develop their dressing skills at home. n The childminder maintains good links with the local school. She takes young children to school events. This helps them to become familiar with teachers and prepares them for their eventual move to school.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder has previous experience of supporting vulnerable children and their families. She understands the importance of working closely with other agencies and sharing relevant information to help to ensure children's safety. The childminder regularly attends safeguarding training to update her knowledge of procedures. She makes sure she is aware of wider safeguarding matters, such as the 'Prevent' duty and the risks associated with terrorism. The childminder knows what to do if she identifies any concerns about children, including documenting and reporting concerns to other professionals.
