p.1

The provision is good

Children show that they are settled and feel safe with the childminder. They benefit from the childminder's caring and attentive nature, revel in praise for their achievements and behave well. Children show confidence as they explore the well- organised environment and make independent choices in their play. The childminder knows what children like to play with and ensures their favourite games and books are available. Children form strong bonds with the childminder and other children.

p.2

The provision is good

Children have a positive attitude to their learning, behave well and are eager to explore and find things out. Children hear and use mathematical language during play. They have fun and concentrate as they spend time manipulating play dough. The childminder counts pieces of dough as children use tools to cut it up. Young children copy her as she models counting, while older children can confidently count and recognise numbers and shapes on the play dough cutters. The childminder has high expectations for children's learning. She promotes their understanding of terms such as 'in' and 'out', 'full' and 'empty', 'above' and 'below'. Children laugh and giggle, and thoroughly enjoy the time that they spend playing with the childminder.

n The childminder recognises the importance of children learning through play. She uses assessment well to monitor children's development and inform planning. The childminder carefully selects resources for children to play with that take account of their interests and promote their focus on learning. Personalised play opportunities help all children to make good progress and develop the skills they need for future learning. n Parents are actively involved in their child's learning. The childminder shares information with them about their child's development and progress. She provides ideas and resources for parents to help them continue their child's learning at home. n Children enjoy using puppets to sing their favourite songs. They wait patiently to have a go, which helps to develop their understanding of good behaviour and teaches them to take turns in their play. The childminder listens attentively to

children and responds well to them. However, she does not consistently repeat words that they struggle to say to ensure that children hear the correct pronunciation. n Children show they are independent from an early age. They have daily opportunities to go outdoors, be active and get fresh air. For example, children strengthen their physical skills as they try and throw hoops over cones. They kick their legs in the ball pool. They laugh as the balls fly out, and work out that

p.2

need to do better?

20 January 2020 the faster they kick, the more balls will come out. The childminder encourages children to follow good hygiene procedures, such as handwashing after being outside or using the toilet and before eating meals. These opportunities all help children to learn about leading a healthy lifestyle. n The childminder provides children with resources to support their imaginations. For example, she ensures role-play activities are readily available so that children can build on what they have already learned. Children dress and care for dolls. They sit with the dolls and show them pictures in a book as they pretend to read stories. Children play balancing games using toys. They show resilience and high levels of determination when they encounter problems fitting the pieces together, without the blocks falling over. The childminder gives them lots of encouragement, so they keep trying until they finally succeed.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder evaluates her setting effectively. She engages well with parents to obtain their views. Parents' written comments demonstrate that they are very happy with the level of care provided and are particularly happy with the strong attachments their children have with the childminder. They say that their children are always excited to attend and have blossomed in her care. n The childminder is focused and ambitious. She evaluates her practice well and continues to strive for improvements. Since her registration, she has altered the environment to provide more opportunities for children to independently explore and investigate the resources. The childminder attends training to help improve her performance. For example, she is currently completing a childcare qualification at level 3.

Safeguarding

The childminder has attended safeguarding training to update her knowledge of wider child protection issues and practice. She understands her responsibilities to keep children safe from harm. She understands the procedure to follow should an allegation be made against herself or a family member. The childminder keeps her home safe for children to play in. She carries out regular checks to ensure all hazards are removed or minimised.
