p.1

The provision is good

Children enjoy attending this welcoming, home-from-home environment and clearly show that they feel safe, secure and settled. They benefit from a well-planned learning programme and respond positively to the childminder's high expectations. Children take part in a wide range of activities that develop their curiosity, imagination and enthusiasm for learning. These activities meet children's needs and interests and support their ongoing good progress.

p.2

The provision is good

Children enjoy exploring their own community. They attend activity-play sessions to specifically further their physical development. This helps them build their core strength and coordination skills. Children learn important skills that will support their future learning and their eventual move on to school. For example, they learn to listen attentively and follow instructions to keep play areas tidy and safe. Children are keen to try new play experiences which build on their knowledge and skills. This helps them to be confident learners. Behaviour is positive and children develop good manners and respect for the childminder's home.

p.2

The provision is good

Children's interest in reading is promoted well by the childminder through the enthusiastic way she reads stories. Children choose books, turn pages and show an interest in the pictures and characters. The childminder encourages this type of activity with additional resources, for example, figures that represent animals and characters to bring stories to life. This supports children's early love of reading well.

n The childminder builds on children's interests and ideas to help keep them motivated and engaged to learn. She takes children to a wide range of places of interest to expand their experiences. For example, they visit the castle, cathedral and museums. Children take part in themed activities such as 'life in Victorian times'. They dress up in clothes of the period and attend a typical school lesson of the day. n The childminder promotes good care practices and encourages children to become independent. For example, children are taught to put on their own coats and shoes and wash their hands before eating. This helps them to make good progress in doing things for themselves. n The childminder makes regular observations and checks on children's learning. She uses this knowledge of their individual progress to help her plan effectively and to swiftly close any gaps in children's learning. n The childminder has a good partnership with parents. She promotes ongoing

9 January 2020 her setting. They comment on the good range of activities on offer. n The childminder has established positive links with other provisions children attend. For example, children accompany the childminder when she takes older children to school. This helps them to become familiar with the school environment. The childminder provides the school with summary records of children's achievements when they eventually move on to school. This supports good continuity in learning. n The childminder is skilled in helping children to gain good communication and language development. She weaves different areas of learning into her programme of activities. This helps children to broaden their knowledge and skills. The childminder consistently asks a variety of questions and gives children time to think and respond. She engages them in meaningful conversations to extend their speaking and listening further. For example, she repeats words and

phrases and introduces new vocabulary, such as 'shiny' and 'sparkly'. Young children respond with enthusiasm as they talk about their favourite cartoon television characters. However, the childminder does not provide younger children with enough opportunities to develop their early interest and skills in technology. n The childminder identifies positive reinforcement as a behaviour management strategy. She gives children regular praise for their efforts and achievements. This helps to boost their confidence and self-esteem. n The childminder successfully promotes children's good health and well-being. She teaches them about good hygiene practices. Children enjoy healthy snacks, including a range of different fruits, and they participate in a variety of physical activities. They have daily opportunities to be outdoors, and make regular visits to local parks. n The childminder's evaluation of her own activity is effective, overall. She is

broadly accurate in identifying the strengths of the provision and aspects she would like to improve. The childminder keeps her mandatory training up to date, such as her first-aid certificate. However, she has not established a focused programme of professional development to build her skills in teaching to the highest level.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder places children's safety and welfare as a high priority. She undertakes regular safeguarding training to maintain her knowledge of local safeguarding procedures. The childminder knows how to recognise any signs and indicators that a child might be at risk of harm, including from extreme views or behaviours. She knows how to report concerns to her local safeguarding board to keep children safe. The childminder ensures that her home is free from hazards and remains a safe place for children to play. She teaches children to be mindful of their own and each other's safety.

p.3

should:

n provide more opportunities for younger children to develop an early understanding of technology and how things work n make the most of available professional development opportunities to build the already good practice to a higher level.
