p.1

The provision is good

The childminder provides a warm, welcoming and homely environment where children feel safe and secure. Effective settling-in processes are in place and the childminder knows the children very well. The childminder is an excellent role model. She expects all children to be courteous. She encourages them to be respectful to others and the environment, and to use good manners at all times. Children are extremely kind and caring. They have formed very strong relationships with the childminder, and demonstrate that they are highly emotionally secure. Toddlers are mature and effortlessly share toys and resources exceptionally well, avoiding dispute and conflict. There is a very strong focus on mathematical development. Young children have numerous opportunities to explore and talk about numbers, shapes and sizes during everyday play. The childminder encourages children to use both English and Italian to develop their understanding

of different languages. For example, she sings counting songs with the children. Toddlers demonstrate that they can count in sequence from one to 20 and repeat English and Italian numbers clearly. Overall, children concentrate for long periods to achieve tasks on their own. They take great pride in themselves when they accomplish their goal. This helps children to develop an exceptionally positive attitude to learning and persevere at new skills.

n Teaching is strong. The childminder has a good knowledge of the early years foundation stage. She uses this to create an exciting and diverse curriculum, across all areas of learning, so children make good progress overall. The childminder can confidently talk about children's abilities, likes and dislikes, and their family backgrounds. She recognises what children can already do and identifies their next steps in learning accurately. n The childminder successfully weaves early literacy and mathematical learning into everyday play. For example, toddlers show an interest in numbers, shapes and letters, and explore a wide selection of books, posters, jigsaws, writing and drawing materials that help them extend their learning. They play matching games, and are confident in naming two- and three-dimensional shapes and adding up large numbers of items in play. Children are well motivated to learn and remain engaged and focused in activities for long periods.

n Children have a good understanding of language and demonstrate confident communication skills. Younger children follow complex instructions, use sentences and learn new vocabulary. For example, when they set up train tracks, they use words such as 'long journey', and they understand that a journey by plane will take longer than going by plane. n The childminder builds good relationships with parents. She keeps in regular contact with parents throughout the day and shares photographs and

14 January 2020 observations of children's activities. Parents describe the environment as 'warm' and 'inviting', where children are 'nurtured and supported to develop'. They make positive comments about the care that the childminder provides, such as 'fantastic range of activities' and 'she takes on children as one of her own'. n Children have plenty of rich opportunities to explore the outdoors and gain good social skills as they meet new people. The childminder organises weekly trips to the local library, farms, soft-play areas and playgroups. Children have a safe and secure outdoor garden area and enjoy exploring woods and parks when on nature walks. n The childminder follows effective hygiene practices. Children enjoy a healthy range of food and drinks as well as daily opportunities for fresh air and exercise. However, sometimes the childminder misses opportunities to provide clear explanations that help children understand the benefits of making healthy food

choices, and the positive impact these have on their bodies. n Overall, the childminder gives children time to explore the potential of materials they are using, without too much adult input, to see what they can do and achieve. However, on occasion, she does not make full use of opportunities to encourage younger children to complete tasks they are capable of doing by themselves, to help them develop their knowledge and independence further. n The childminder self-evaluates her provision and adopts a positive attitude towards making improvements to practice. She attends regular meetings, local support groups and training courses to improve her knowledge and skills. Additionally, she seeks the views of her co-childminder and values her opinions to enhance the quality of the provision.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder keeps her safeguarding knowledge updated regularly through attending training courses. She can identify signs and symptoms which may indicate that a child is at risk of harm. She is also aware of wider safeguarding concerns and who to contact if concerned about a child in her care. The premises are secure. Risk assessments are in place and updated on a regular basis. The childminder and her co-childminder carry out daily checks of the indoor and outdoor environments to ensure they remain safe for children to use.
