p.1

The provision is good

Children are happy and relaxed in the childminder's warm and welcoming home. They form affectionate relationships with the childminder and each other. Younger children settle quickly to explore the many toys and activities and enjoy regular cuddles. Older children become confident and eager learners.

p.2

The provision is good

Children benefit from a well-thought-out curriculum that takes account of their interests and individual learning needs. The childminder makes important links between children's experiences to develop their skills in all areas of learning. For example, children thoroughly enjoy making their own 'farm' using soil, grass and seeds after an outing to see farm animals. They use their senses to explore and develop their knowledge of the natural world.

p.2

The provision is good

Children take turns, share and cooperate well together during play. The childminder has high expectations for good behaviour, and children have a clear understanding of what is expected of them. Older children learn to consider the younger ones and happily include them in their play.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder is well qualified and has an excellent understanding of child development. She uses her considerable teaching skills effectively to support children's learning and development. Older children gain good literacy skills as the childminder encourages them to recognise letter sounds and rhyming words in familiar stories. This prepares them well for future learning and moving on to school.

p.2

need to do better?

n Children gain good communication and language skills. The childminder skilfully encourages older children to explore language and use new words such as 'squishy' as they play with muddy soil. They extend their vocabulary and explain their ideas fluently. Younger children babble along to songs and rhymes and smile with delight as they copy the sounds farm animals make. n The childminder skilfully manages the routines and learning experiences for children of different ages and stages of development. As older children become engrossed in building a car park for their toy cars, the childminder encourages younger children to build a tower with blocks to develop their physical skills. n The childminder evaluates her practice effectively and consults parents and children about any potential improvements. Parents speak highly of the care their children receive and appreciate the wide variety of experiences their

14 January 2020 social skills. The childminder makes the most of opportunities to extend their learning. For example, they count out the bowls and plates and make comparisons about quantities. n The valuable relationships the childminder forms, with other providers and local schools, provide continuity and consistency for children and their families. She works in effective collaboration with other professionals when children need extra help. This ensures that all children make good progress in their learning and development. n The childminder provides a good range of resources that inspire children's imaginations and encourage exploration. However, there are fewer resources available to reflect other cultures and communities. Therefore, children do not have regular opportunities to make comparisons between their own lives and those of others in the wider world. n Partnerships with parents are good and the childminder keeps parents well

informed about their children's development. The childminder finds out about children's home routines when they start to attend. However, she does not gather information about children's abilities and achievements to inform her planning from the outset.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder keeps her knowledge of safeguarding procedures up to date so that she is aware of any changes to legislation. She has a good understanding of the signs and symptoms that may indicate a child is at risk of harm. The childminder is confident about the correct procedure to follow to keep children safe and secure. She teaches children about keeping themselves safe as they play and supervises them conscientiously.

p.3

should:

n gather more detailed information about what children already know and can do when they first start to attend to clearly establish their starting points n develop more opportunities for children to find out about other cultures to help them compare their own way of life to those of other communities.
