The provision is good
The childminder provides a safe, well-organised environment both inside and outside. Children are comfortable in this home-from-home environment. The childminder offers a large choice of stimulating, easily accessible resources that she uses to promote development in all areas of learning. Children independently choose what they would like to play with and concentrate on their chosen activities. The childminder promotes good health. Children explore growing fruits and vegetables in the garden and the childminder prepares nutritious hot meals for them each day. They eat together at the dining table and talk about what they have been doing. Children have fun with the childminder, who skilfully joins them in their play. She assesses their progress and extends their learning as they pursue their own interests. For example, children confidently counted the number of people around the dining table and they talked about shapes as they carefully

threaded them onto string to make necklaces. The childminder provides a curriculum that is rich in language and encourages communication. This was shown when the children confidently used and named a 'stethoscope' and 'pollen' in their play.

need to do better?
n The childminder has a secure knowledge and understanding of how children learn and develop. She uses this to plan for what they need to learn next. For example, she gives children activities that develop their small hand muscles so that they can start to write. However, she does not give children sufficient opportunity to develop their independence skills. n The childminder has high expectations of children's behaviour. She uses praise and effective strategies to help them learn how to manage their own feelings and behaviour. Children's behaviour is good and their self-esteem and confidence levels are high. n The childminder has a very effective settling-in procedure. As a result, strong, positive attachments between children and the childminder have been formed and children are emotionally secure. For example, children laughed as they role played being doctors and attempted to find out what was wrong with the

childminder, their 'patient'. n Children develop their creative skills while exploring through open-ended play. For example, one child made a paper rose from a page of print from a magazine; another child went on tell a story about a bee who visited the paper flower. Children have access to a music room where they have opportunities to explore many instruments from different cultures. For example, they enjoyed playing a variety of rhythms on an Indian drum; they laughed as they drummed the tabla and danced around the room. The childminder supported the children's listening skills as they listened to the beat that she drummed on the tabla and

7 January 2020 then attempted to repeat it. n Parents are extremely happy with the care and education provided by the childminder. They say that she is 'very flexible' and that their children 'love being there'. n The childminder reviews and updates resources to ensure that they meet the children's needs. She evaluates her provision to identify areas for improvement. She intends to attend training to support families with developing their children's language at home. n Although children have regular access to a large garden, they are not challenged in their physical play or encouraged to take appropriate risks.
p.2
Safeguarding
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
p.3
Safeguarding
The childminder understands her responsibility to protect children in her care. She knows how to identify the possible signs of abuse and neglect and how to report any concerns that she may have about a child. The childminder keeps her safeguarding knowledge up to date through attending regular safeguarding training and links with the local authority. Her home is well organised and she has suitable space for children to move freely both indoors and outside. She regularly monitors and reduces risks around her home to help keep children safe.

should:
n provide further resources and opportunities to support children's physical development n plan more opportunities for children to do things for themselves and develop their self-help skills.
