The provision is good
Children settle quickly and enjoy the homely environment that the childminder provides. They demonstrate that they feel safe and secure in her care. For example, they reach out for reassurance and cuddles, especially when feeling tired and when they read books together. The childminder offers a wide choice of toys and equipment to support children's learning. Children are confident to lead their own learning. They make choices about what they want to play with or do. Children develop a positive attitude towards learning. They are motivated to play, explore and learn. Children develop coordination and strength in their hands to support their early writing skills. For example, young children learn to manipulate dough, hold a paintbrush correctly and begin to give meaning to marks. They are developing the skills they need for the next stage in their learning and eventual move on to school. The childminder gives children praise and encouragement,

need to do better?
n The childminder understands how children learn and is skilled at supporting their unique interests. She uses her observations and assessments to plan for, and consolidate, children's learning. She continues to monitor progress and skilfully identifies any delays in their development. The childminder works hard to close any gaps in learning to ensure all children make progress from when they first start. However, occasionally, activities are not organised well enough to make sure that all children are fully engaged and challenged at the highest level. n The childminder supports children's communication skills effectively. She speaks clearly and uses repetition to help younger children pronounce letter sounds. Children enjoy singing their favourite nursery rhymes and do actions with high levels of enthusiasm and excitement. n Children develop strong bonds with the childminder from the outset. The childminder is kind and sensitive to children's needs. She quickly notices when

children are tired or hungry and responds quickly to their individual needs. Care routines are implemented well. The childminder helps children to settle quickly and feel secure, which promotes their emotional well-being effectively. n The childminder's encouraging approach provides a strong base for developing children's independence and significantly increases their confidence in their own abilities. Children thrive in the care of this nurturing and attentive childminder. For example, children delight as they press buttons to make different sounds on programmable toys and manage to put on their own shoes.

need to do better?
9 January 2020 n Children enjoy visits to local toddler groups where they meet with other childminders and their children. This provides children with opportunities to socialise in larger groups and make new friendships. The childminder offers children a wide range of experiences that promote their understanding of communities beyond their own. For instance, children regularly visit parks, libraries, shops and local places of interest. n The childminder understands the importance of promoting healthy eating. She provides information to parents about a healthy balanced diet and active movement. For example, she engages in conversation about healthy food choices at mealtimes, which supports children's understanding and awareness of healthy eating. n The childminder effectively reflects on her practice. She asks parents to complete questionnaires, and regularly asks them if they are satisfied with her service, to help her to assess the quality of her provision. She has forged strong

links with other professionals in her area, who help to support her in her work. She works effectively in partnerships with other settings children attend. She regularly shares information with them to enhance children's experiences and maintain continuity in their learning. n The childminder makes sure that all her mandatory training is kept up to date. However, she does not have a targeted programme of professional development in place to help to raise the good quality of teaching.

Safeguarding
The childminder demonstrates a good understanding of her role in safeguarding children. She has a secure knowledge and understanding of the signs and indicators of harm. The childminder is confident of the procedures to follow, should she have any concerns about a child's welfare. She is aware of her responsibilities should an allegation be made against herself or any member of her household. She checks her home prior to children's arrival and takes steps to minimise any possible risks. This helps to keep children safe.
