p.1

The provision is outstanding

Children are extremely happy and settled in the childminder's home. They are very excited to see the childminder and their friends. Children enthusiastically seek out the childminder for cuddles and spontaneously offer hugs to their peers. They talk with affection about the children who are not present, identify their photographs and ask when they will see them next. Children flourish in the childminder's care. Their behaviour is impeccable and the childminder successfully demonstrates respect and understanding for children to copy. From a young age children show a remarkable understanding of how their behaviour impacts on others. As children make a snowman, the childminder challenges them to think about, and discuss, how they feel and what makes them feel happy and sad.

The provision is outstanding

The skilled and experienced childminder has exceptionally high aspirations for all the children in her care. She creates an environment that provides children with opportunities to thrive and make rapid progress. Children confidently explore the environment and resources with high levels of independence, and enthusiastically describe what they are doing. Older children are extremely confident in accessing all resources that they need to follow their interests. They understand the need for safety. For example, they discuss how small toys are not safe for babies and why these toys need to be kept separate.

n The childminder devises a rich and well-thought-out curriculum. She expertly observes play and incorporates children's interests into the varied selection of resources and well-organised activities that she plans. For instance, the childminder places a strong focus on ensuring younger children develop their fine physical skills that will help them greatly in their future learning. She acts on every possible opportunity to support the development of their hand muscles. For example, children use a wealth of writing tools to practise their mark-making skills. Children also manipulate, twist and turn toy tools as they pretend to repair a broken chair. n The childminder skilfully adapts activities to meet all children's needs. She seamlessly weaves early mathematical concepts into everyday activities. Children learn to count, recognise shapes and use positional language during their play. For example, older children compare size and discuss the differences between a

hexagon and an octagon, while younger children match basic shapes of square and triangle. n The childminder praises children highly for their achievements and perseverance. This helps to boost children's confidence. The childminder models polite and calm behaviour and offers the children choices in everything that they do. This helps them to become skilled thinkers and proficient decision makers.

can improve even further. The childminder conducts robust supervision sessions with her assistant. This leads to excellent professional development opportunities that are meaningful and relate to the children she is caring for at the time. For example, she is currently developing her knowledge of Makaton to support and enhance children's communication skills even further. n The childminder expertly extends children's early literacy skills. She makes excellent use of stories and songs to capture and engage children's interest. For example, when reading a story, she asks what is happening in the pictures. Children show great confidence as they excitedly respond when they know the answer. Older children are extremely well supported to develop their early reading skills. For example, they understand that print carries meaning. They show a genuine love of and interest in books as they pretend to read a story to
