p.1

The provision is good

The childminder provides children with a stimulating learning environment both indoors and outdoors. She offers a wide choice of toys and equipment to support children's learning. She encourages children's participation, concentration and engagement well.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder provides a variety of experiences to support children's literacy skills. Children practise making marks, enjoy listening to stories and looking at books together and independently. They are very settled and happy, and enjoy exploring and leading their own learning through play. For example, young children like to build with bricks, their concentration is very good, and they keep on trying when initially unsuccessful in fastening bricks together. They are very proud when they complete their task.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder gives children plenty of praise and encouragement, which supports their self-esteem and confidence. She uses a consistent approach to encourage children's good behaviour. They behave well and learn to share and take turns. The childminder supports children's emotional well-being very effectively. She is kind and caring, and children build positive and trusting relationships with her and each other.

p.2

The provision is good

Parents are extremely positive about the childminder. They confirm the breadth of opportunities that benefit their children's care and learning. They say that the setting is 'very stimulating and educational' and that the children 'thrive on the outdoor play opportunities available'.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder thoughtfully plans a range of innovative and challenging activities and experiences. She builds skilfully on what children already know and can do. The childminder observes and assesses children and uses what she knows and what parents tell her to plan effectively for the next steps in their learning. n The childminder promotes children's speech and language skills very effectively. For example, she engages children in meaningful conversations to extend their communication skills. While looking at books, the childminder asks children to name what they can see in the pictures. She shows children how to pronounce words by repeating what they say in the correct way. n Children have plenty of opportunities to learn about their wider community. They regularly visit parks, playgroups and other places of local interest. Children develop good social skills and enjoy playing alongside others. They are kind and

helpful towards each other. Their behaviour is consistently good.

need to do better?

9 January 2020 n Young children follow good hygiene routines. For example, they use individual hand towels, after washing their hands, to prevent cross-contamination. The childminder gives clear messages about healthy lifestyles. For example, she provides nutritious snacks and meals, and children benefit from exercise, on various outings and in the large, well-equipped outdoor space. All children are encouraged to be as independent as possible. For example, toddlers learn to wash their hands and to feed themselves. n The childminder has a good knowledge of all seven areas of learning. She provides children with motivating activities and experiences to interest them in their learning. However, she does not consistently provide children with opportunities to extend their interest and skills in mathematics even further. n The childminder is committed to improving her knowledge and skills. She meets with early years professionals, including other childminders, for discussions and

updates. She completes training to help her to address individual children's needs. For example, she has increased her understanding of how to develop children's speech and language skills. The childminder reflects thoughtfully on the service she provides to help her develop and raise the quality of the service. However, she does not make the most of opportunities for parents or children to contribute to the self-evaluation.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder completes training to keep her child protection knowledge up to date. She is aware of the signs of abuse and neglect and knows the local referral procedures to follow if she has a concern. The childminder keeps her knowledge up to date and is aware of wider child protection issues. She makes sure that her house and garden are secure so that children are always safe. The childminder identifies and successfully minimises potential risks in her home.

p.3

should:

n provide more opportunities during children's play and routines to consistently promote children's early mathematical development even more effectively n strengthen self-evaluation even further to include the views of parents and children to help identify and make continuous improvements.
