The provision is good
Children settle in well and readily bond with the caring childminder. They form close relationships with her, so helping them to feel safe and secure. Children learn to follow rules and behave well. For example, they know they must sit at the table for mealtimes. They enjoy the praise and encouragement that the childminder offers, which helps them to develop high levels of confidence and self-esteem. Children respond positively when the childminder encourages them to assist with daily routines, such as helping to peel and cut fruit at snack time. Children show curiosity and become highly involved in their play. For example, young toddlers concentrated intently as they discovered how to operate electronic toys to create sounds and other effects. The childminder has high expectations for children. She recognises their individual interests and provides activities which motivate them to learn. However, resources are not organised in a way that encourages independent

learning and, although children are offered a variety of experiences and resources, 'understanding the world' is less well promoted than other areas of learning.

need to do better?
n The childminder interacts well with the children and plays alongside them. She uses these opportunities effectively to support children's learning. For instance, she comments on what children are doing, so introducing them to new words and developing their language skills. The childminder supports children who speak English as an additional language, by learning some words that she can use in their home language. n Overall, the childminder plans her early years curriculum well. However, she places less emphasis on understanding the world than on other areas of learning. n The childminder makes regular assessments of what children know and can do and recognises any gaps in their development. Children successfully build on the skills and knowledge that have when they join the setting. For example, they develop and strengthen their small-muscle movements by using various tools, including paintbrushes and cutlery. This helps them to gain the physical skills

and concentration needed for writing. n Children show positive and enthusiastic attitudes towards learning. They become absorbed in their play and concentrate well on activities which interest them. Children develop a keen interest in books and stories, which supports their early literacy skills. The childminder provides books for parents to read with their children to help support their continued progress at home. n The childminder promotes children's personal care skills extremely well. For example, she teaches children to use knives safely as they help to cut up fruit at snack time. The childminder is exceptionally patient and encouraging, which helps children to develop the confidence to do things by themselves. However,

need to do better?
19 December 2019 the organisation of toys and resources does not support children's independent choices during play. n The childminder is well qualified and experienced. She ensures that she attends relevant training to help her keep children safe and she uses her links with other childminders as a way to help her develop her teaching skills further. n The childminder reflects on her practice and actively seeks the views of parents. She uses their views to help her develop her provision. For example, she consults parents to help her devise healthy menus for children. She includes some of the foods that children enjoy eating at home. This helps children to feel valued and to learn about differences between themselves and others.
p.2
Safeguarding
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
p.3
Safeguarding
The childminder accesses regular training to help her safeguard children. This includes maintaining a paediatric first-aid qualification and continuously updating her knowledge of child protection issues. The childminder demonstrates a good understanding of how to protect the children she cares for. She knows how to recognise possible signs of abuse and understands the correct procedures to follow should she become concerned about a child's welfare. This includes where children may have been exposed to radical or extreme views. The childminder knows what to do should an allegation be made about her or a member of her household. The childminder checks her home each day to ensure that the environment and resources are safe and suitable for children. She assesses potential risks to children when she takes them on outings and takes effective action to minimise these.
