The child who moved in just before the last inspection has settled into the home well. He benefits from positive, trusting relationships with the staff and enjoys normal childhood activities, such as playing games. The caring and nurturing staff help the children and young people to feel safe and secure. Another child moved in last week. The manager planned this admission and took steps to gather appropriate information about the child’s needs. She used this information to assess the identified risks and ensure that this would be a suitable match for the other three children and young people. The staff actively promote the children and young people’s education. One young person has successfully progressed to school from having home tuition. Another young person is benefiting from moving to an educational setting better suited to his needs. All the children and young people have good attendance at school.
p.2
children and young people since the most recent full inspection
There were plenty of preparations for Christmas celebrations and good planning to ensure that the children and young people enjoy some family time over this period. The staff are committed to this, including being on duty on Christmas Day to take a young person home. The staff understand and respond well to the individual needs of the children and young people. The children and young people benefit from regular one-to-one time with staff. This is used to educate the children and young people about the dangers of exploitation and substance misuse. The staff provide the children and young people with plenty of emotional support, and are patient and sensitive with them. This helps the children and young people to understand why they do not all do, or all get, the same things, and it prevents jealousy and falling out with each other. The manager has addressed the issues of professional practice that arose after the

last inspection. At the time, there was a negative impact on the children and young people’s routines, welfare and relationships with staff. The manager’s actions have ensured that better standards of professional practice are now maintained. The monthly independent monitoring reports are thorough and contribute to the good management oversight of the home and standards of care. The independent visitor identifies where improvements can be made. There is a suitable management response to implementing both these recommendations and the ones from the last Ofsted inspection. Since the last inspection, the manager and staff have increased the free time of two of the young people. This has given them the opportunity to develop friendships outside of the home and become more independent. are in place, and they no longer work excessive hours. Any significant incidents have been notified to Ofsted as required. This is better management practice and contributes to the safeguarding of children and young people. Recently, one of the young people has chosen not to come home sometimes after school. The staff respond well to this and actively look for him and ensure that he is found. Planning how to reduce these risks, in conjunction with the police and placing authority, is helping to keep him safe. The children and young people’s behaviour is good. The staff encourage this through discussion, incentives and loss of privileges if there is poor behaviour. The use of physical intervention by staff is rare and only as a last resort, with minimal force. The manager and regional manager monitor when it is used to make sure that it is appropriate. The children and young people have a good voice in the home. They make choices

about meals, their room decor and activities. The staff respond well through regular daily conversation and make time to talk about any incidents that have occurred. Two of the young people have their own chill-out rooms, and a safe space is being created in a third room for the other two children. Inspection report children’s home: SC460063 4
