p.1

The provision is good

The childminder makes sure children are busy and active. She provides a full and varied curriculum that successfully promotes all areas of children's learning. She knows children very well and has high expectations of them. The childminder challenges children to keep on trying. She frequently praises their efforts and tells them how proud she is when they do something well. This helps children to feel good about themselves and build their confidence.

p.2

The provision is good

Children show they feel very comfortable, happy and safe in the childminder's care. They behave very well because they understand what is expected of them. They follow clear and consistent routines that help to keep them safe. For example, they know they must sit on the stairs and wait their turn to get into the car.

p.2

The provision is good

Children thoroughly enjoy their play and learning. They listen well to engaging stories, which the childminder enhances using props. They delight in role-play activities and squeal with excitement when they race cars and test which one goes faster. There is scope for children to expand their speaking skills and learn even more about the natural world.

need to do better?

n The childminder is a qualified and experienced teacher. She manages her time effectively so that children enjoy a broad range of indoor and outdoor learning opportunities each day. Assessment is accurate and used effectively to help children make good progress. n The childminder helps children to learn about mathematical concepts, such as number, size and quantity. She encourages children to think and solve simple problems by themselves. Children model being a thinker. A wonderful example of this is when they place their finger on their lips and say, 'Humm, I have an idea!'. n The childminder is a skilful communicator and provides very clear explanations to help children understand. One of her key strengths is the way she poses questions that encourage children to think and talk about their play. However, occasionally, she overlooks opportunities to pronounce some words correctly, so that children can hear and copy them.

p.2

need to do better?

n Well-established care practices have a positive impact on children's confidence and behaviour. Young children play particularly well together. The childminder takes time to teach children how to share resources and take turns. She praises them for using beautiful manners and working as a team. n The childminder looks for ways for children to enjoy new learning experiences in the community. For instance, she takes children to the local care home to meet and interact with older people. This benefits children's social development as

They report that she 'does an outstanding job'. They say children love her company and flourish in her nurturing and stimulating environment. Parents appreciate being kept well informed of children's progress, such as through social media and daily diaries. n The childminder has made improvements to her garden. For example, she has added a large covered area so that children can play actively outside in all weathers. She has rightly identified that she can enhance outdoor experiences so that children learn even more about the natural world and where food comes from. n The childminder reflects on her practice and shows a strong commitment to her

ongoing professional development. She makes good use of new knowledge gained from training to benefit children. For example, following a course on mark making, she increased activities to support children's upper body strength and develop their fine motor skills. n Partnerships with other professionals are strong. The childminder meets regularly with other childminders in the area to share ideas. She works closely with health professionals and follows their guidance to help support children's physical needs.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder regularly refreshes her knowledge of child protection issues. In her previous role as a secondary-school teacher, she gained valuable experience of managing a range of safeguarding concerns. Consequently, she has a thorough understanding of her responsibilities and knows how to take prompt action to protect children from harm. The childminder ensures her home is clean, safe and secure. She helps children to develop an understanding of risk. For instance, she teaches children how to climb up and sit sensibly on the high stools in the kitchen.
