p.1

The provision is good

The children settle quickly when they arrive at this home-from-home setting. The childminder offers the children and parents a warm welcome. She sets out activities that interest children and they are keen to take part. The children feel safe and secure with the childminder and have a close relationship with her. For example, if they are unsure how to work a toy, they confidently ask her to help them. The childminder patiently shows the children what to do and then gives them time to have a go themselves. The childminder has high expectations of the children and they display good behaviour. They know the routines of the setting. Children take their shoes and coat off when they arrive and put them away in the correct place. The childminder encourages the children to persevere if they find tasks difficult and praises them when they succeed. The children work well together. They take turns fitting animal shapes into a puzzle, moving the pieces carefully until they fit. They

n The childminder finds out about what the children already know and builds on this. She provides activities for children's interests. Children are keen to learn. For instance, the children show an interest in learning about people who help us. They enjoy visits to a local toy library where they choose to borrow a post office set and fire station set. This helps to enhance their learning. Children excitedly look at books about the fire service and are keen to share them with adults. n The childminder takes the children out daily to the park or local groups. Children's physical development is promoted well. The childminder has made links with other providers so that the children have a wide range of opportunities to be part of a larger group. This link supports her continuous professional development. The childminder can access support and share her experiences with other early years professionals. n The childminder has a good relationship with parents. They are positive about

the care their children receive. Parents comment that they feel fully included in their child's care and learning. The childminder works with parents to develop the children's self-care and independence skills. Parents are informed daily about the activities the children have done, through discussion, videos and photographs. The children are keen to look at books with her and point to the pictures and repeat the words she says to them. She models good speaking and listening skills to the children. When making a snowman using creative materials, the childminder offered different words they could use instead of the word 'big', extending their language. n Children know the childminder's expectations for their behaviour. They understand the routines of the setting. At snack time, they sit patiently and wait for their drinks and snack and talk to each other. They listen to their friends and show kindness and empathy towards them. They share experiences from home of opening their advent calendars in preparation for Christmas, listening to each other and responding appropriately. n The childminder talks to the children when they are playing and provides a wide

range of toys for them to use. However, the childminder does not always offer the children different resources that give them opportunities to explore and display curiosity.
