The provision is good
Children are happy, settled and confident in the childminder's care. They show they feel safe as they approach her for cuddles and reassurance. She is eager to consistently meet the needs of the children. Children enjoy exploring and leading their own learning through play. For example, children focus well and are thrilled as they explore a box to discover its contents. They are amazed at the objects they find and practise posting the items back into the box with delight. The childminder demonstrates a good understanding of how young children learn, by providing resources that encourage children's curiosity.

The provision is good
The childminder uses her good knowledge of child development to help her to plan activities which support their interests. She is a positive role model, who provides children with plenty of praise and encouragement, which supports their self-esteem and confidence well. The childminder has high expectations of children and gives gentle reminders to guide their behaviour. She helps children to learn about their feelings and emotions, and they learn to recognise when they are tired. The childminder helps children to become familiar with routines and to prepare for their move to school, for example, by learning to use utensils for eating.

need to do better?
n Partnership with parents is good. The childminder ensures that parents are kept informed about every aspect of their children's care and development. Parents comment that are very happy with the care and safety of their children. n The childminder collects detailed information from parents when their children first start. For instance, she finds out about children's interests, current levels of development and their routines. This helps her to provide good consistency in their care and learning from the beginning. n The childminder demonstrates her commitment to working in partnership with other professionals. For instance, she completes the progress check for children aged two and encourages parents to share it with the health visitor. n The childminder reflects on her setting and carefully considers where she can make improvements. She demonstrates a commitment to ongoing improvement and actively seeks the views of parents, other childminders and professionals to

achieve a good level of provision. For example, she liaises with other childminders in the area and they share knowledge, ideas of good practice and keep up to date with any new legislation. n The childminder updates her knowledge and skills to a good level and researches any areas where children may need support, through training courses and online publications. She attends training and local authority courses, including safeguarding. The childminder talks with interest about how the training has helped to improve her practice. For example, recent training has

9 December 2019 improved her approach to managing children's behaviour. n Children learn and develop across a broad range of areas. The childminder regularly checks the progress children are making. She uses this information to consider what they need to learn next and plans activities to further support their learning. n Children have many opportunities to learn about the world around them. For example, they are fascinated by the play kitchen and enjoy examining and playing with its contents. The childminder develops children's communication and language skills effectively. She maintains a narrative as they play, repeats words and gives children time to respond. However, the childminder does not provide as many opportunities for children to practise early writing skills during their play. n The childminder carefully considers the activities and experiences that she provides for children. She makes good observations to gain insight into what

Safeguarding
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
p.3
Safeguarding
The childminder demonstrates a secure knowledge of signs of abuse and what action to take if she has any concerns about a child's welfare. She updates her training and shows a good knowledge of wider child protection issues. The childminder uses a range of strategies to help to keep children safe. For example, she records visitors to her home, ensures doors are locked and supervises children closely at all times. The childminder carries out checks to her home to help ensure that all areas used by children are safe.
