p.1

The provision is good

There is a strong focus on building children's personal, social and emotional development. The childminder teaches children how to behave and the reasons behind any boundaries through age-appropriate explanations. She rewards good behaviour with plenty of praise to help strengthen children's self-esteem. Children listen well to the childminder and share resources with each other. For example, when they have finished with a book they pass this to their friend. Children allow their friends to use the pushchair to push their doll around.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder has effective settling-in procedures. These are tailored for each family so that she can find out all the information she needs about each child. Children come for visits before they start so that they get to know the childminder. They show that they feel safe and secure in her home and have established good relationships with her and each other.

p.2

The provision is good

Children are developing their independence well. They freely select resources and are involved in decisions about what toys they want to play with. Children demonstrate good concentration skills as they carefully stack tubs to make a high tower. They enjoy exploring the texture of coloured dough and using different tools to create different shapes.

n The childminder has a good understanding of children's interests. She observes children during play and uses this information effectively. The childminder knows how each child is developing and what each individual child needs to learn next. She knows their likes and dislikes and uses these to plan a wide range of activities that they are interested in. Children are well prepared for their next stage in learning. n The childminder knows what she wants children to learn. She plans a curriculum that is varied and interesting for children to help them gain a range of knowledge and skills. Toys and equipment are easily accessible for children and they are keen to play with what is on offer. However, there are fewer opportunities for children to build their mathematical knowledge through play. n Children learn the importance of healthy practices as the childminder explains these to them. She shows children how to wash their hands effectively, and this

is embedded in their daily routine. Children receive a balanced diet and enjoy eating pasta, vegetables and fruit. The childminder talks to them about the benefits of eating their vegetables, and children know that a good diet will help make them big and strong. n Children learn about safe practices as they play. The childminder gives them age-appropriate explanations to help them learn. For example, she reminds

27 November 2019 children to be careful of their head as they come out from the den under the table. She suggests that children tidy up before they begin their action songs so that they do not stand on anything hard and hurt themselves. Children gladly help to clear a safe space. n The childminder works well with parents. She provides information on how each child has been, what they enjoy doing, and how they are developing. She gives parents ideas for things to do at home, for example taking the children to see the planes coming in to land. Parents provide positive comments about the childminder and the care that she offers. n Children have many opportunities to develop a love of books. The childminder shares a variety of books with children, who make up their own stories as they pretend to read to her. She reads well to children. They listen with interest and are keen to hear more. n The childminder talks to children during their play. She asks some effective

questions, overall, and provides a commentary about what she is doing. However, the childminder is not consistently successful in fully engaging all children in conversation to develop their speech and communication further.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder has all the required documentation which contributes to children's safety and health. She demonstrates a good understanding of how to protect the children in her care from harm. The childminder updates her knowledge through training, including the wider aspects of safeguarding. She knows what signs to look for in a child's life that may raise concerns that they are suffering abuse. The childminder understands the process to follow to refer any concerns, and the correct agencies to work with to ensure children are protected.
