p.1

The provision is good

Children are settled and happy in the care of the childminder. They are confident and have high self-esteem. For example, they excitedly show visitors the Christmas trees they have been decorating and talk about how good they are at drawing circles. Overall, they have lots of opportunities to make independent choices about their play. When they decide they are going to do some chalking, the childminder extends this to support their emerging writing skills by sounding out and writing her own name on the board. This helps them to recognise that print carries meaning.

p.2

The provision is good

Children are particularly imaginative. They talk animatedly to one another about what they are cooking. The childminder gets involved in their play and responds as they come up with ideas. She skilfully extends their play to introduce counting, shapes and letters. For example, she asks if the pot contains salt because there is an 's' on the top of it.

p.2

The provision is good

Children are learning to share and negotiate. They sing the 'please and thank you' song which reminds them of good manners, and they know they need to say 'please' when they ask for something. They show respect and concern for one another as, for example, they help each other take the backing paper off stickers. The childminder praises their great teamwork.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder places great emphasis on good behaviour and successfully helps children to understand boundaries. She explains clearly that if they will not share a toy then it will have to be put away and she helps them to find a solution. She gives consistent messages to help children manage their feelings and moderate their behaviour. n Children are very confident communicators. They chat enthusiastically to each other, the childminder and visitors. The childminder reports rapid progress with their speech and introduces new vocabulary to build on this further. For example, when children say they are first, she tells them that they are the 'leader'. n The childminder promotes healthy eating. Children bring their own food and she encourages them to pick out healthy choices for their snack. When a child says they are unsure which things are healthy, the childminder discusses this with them. n Children develop good social skills. They get on well together and go out to local

groups to meet a wider circle of friends. They also take part in activities that help them to learn about the people that come from different areas of the world. This helps them to learn about similarities and differences.

p.2

need to do better?

10 December 2019 n The childminder works in effective partnership with parents in order to meet children's needs. She talks to parents to find out about the children and shares her assessments of each child's progress. This involves parents in their children's learning. n At the inspection, books were not readily available to enable the children to choose and look at them. This does not support their emerging literacy skills as much as possible. n The childminder does not consistently support children to learn about good hygiene practices. Although they did wash their hands after using the toilet, they did not do so before eating their snack. n The childminder knows children well. She accurately assesses their level of development and knows what they need to do next to continue to make good progress. n The childminder is keen to develop her provision further. She has already undertaken training on caring for children with special educational needs and/or

disabilities and is planning to complete more to extend her skills. She is also eager to find out more about forest school teaching so that she can further enhance children's play in local woodland.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder has a secure understanding of how to safeguard children and has recently refreshed her training in this area. She knows the possible signs that a child may be at risk of harm and is confident about the procedures to follow if she has concerns. She has had to take action to protect a child previously and would not hesitate to do so again. Children learn about how to stay safe as the childminder reminds them why they should not climb on the furniture and why they must sit down to eat.
