The provision requires improvement

Children are happy, settled and form secure attachments with the childminder, who is friendly and caring. However, the quality of the childminder's teaching does not consistently help children to be fully engaged in meaningful and age-appropriate play experiences. Children follow instructions and listen attentively to what the childminder says. However, they do not always have enough opportunities to make decisions and lead their play when they move between the different areas of the premises. At times, their learning is not supported well enough and children lose interest in adult-led activities. Children do not make the full progress that they are capable of. That said, some areas of their learning are better supported. Children enjoy listening to stories and putting together blocks to make a tower. They are respectful to visitors. Children play well together, share and take turns. They interact with each other and learn about keeping themselves safe and well. The

childminder reminds children to wash their hands before meals. Children are provided with healthy meals and snacks, which include vegetable sticks and fruit. They are supported to be physically active in the childminder's garden, where they run around, balance on the brick wall and ride toy tractors.

need to do better?

n The childminder has received some support from the local authority to address the actions set at the previous inspection. She has attended mandatory training to keep children safe. However, she does not plan effectively for her own professional development to raise her knowledge and teaching practice to a good level. n The childminder does not always successfully adapt her teaching to follow children's play ideas. She does not consistently organise the learning environment as well as possible to motivate children to make decisions in their play. The childminder often asks children to move from the first floor of the house to the ground floor. During these times, children's play is interrupted and they lose interest and engagement in their learning. This does not help children to make as much progress as possible. n The childminder has started to monitor children's progress and has identified some aspects of their learning that require support. However, this system is not

fully embeded to ensure all aspects of children's development needs are targeted precisely. For example, she helps children to learn about numbers. However, she does not always use these successfully to help children build their knowledge and understanding of how to use these in different situations. n Children behave well. The childminder helps children to understand age- appropriate boundaries. Children listen well to show that they understand what the childminder expects of them. The childminder praises children's achievements and efforts, which helps to develop their confidence and self-

4 December 2019 esteem well. n There are some aspects of the childminder's practice that require improvement. However, children acquire some key skills that prepare them for school. The childminder helps children to develop independence as they learn to complete manageable tasks. For example, children learn to feed themselves during mealtimes, tidy up the toys and put their coats on. The childminder talks to children and models language well. Children enjoy singing songs and repeating words that the childminder says. They know the different colours and shapes. Children enjoy role play and imitate the noises that they think dinosaurs would make. They enjoy exploring the natural world around them and putting food on the table for the birds. n The childminder has good relationships with parents. She shares information with them about their child's day while in her care, including places that they have visited. Parents' written comments indicate that they are happy with the

care that the childminder provides. They say that their children enjoy attending the childminder's provision. n The childminder takes children to local community groups where they meet other adults and children. This encourages children's interactions in different situations and promotes an understanding of people and communities beyond their own experiences. Children learn to recognise and value each other's differences and similarities.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder understands her role in protecting children who may be at risk of harm. She is alert to possible indicators of abuse, and knows the relevant agencies to contact for guidance. The childminder is aware of the correct procedure to take should there be an allegation. The premises are secure. The childminder carries out daily checks of the indoor and outdoor areas to ensure they remain safe for children to use. The childminder obtains written permission from parents to administer medication and keeps a record of this. Policies and procedures to promote children's safety and welfare are implemented effectively.
