The provision requires improvement

Children are content as they arrive at the setting and separate from parents with ease. The childminder develops clear routines to ensure she meets children's need for play, comfort, rest and refreshment. Children have access to a variety of resources to support their small-muscle movements. They show good control as they push the cars along the track. The childminder encourages them to develop their walking ability by providing opportunities to cruise around the room. The childminder does not yet gain the views of others to support and develop her practice. She does not take the opportunity to develop her own knowledge and understanding to further some aspects of the early years foundation stage. For example, mathematics is not yet fully embedded into the environment to extend children's knowledge. The childminder ensures she engages with the children as they play. Children are well behaved as they play together. For instance, children

follow the childminder's lead by taking turns to add the balls into the holes. Children make progress and are confident. However, the monitoring of children's learning and development is not yet robust. For example, the childminder does not gain knowledge from parents regarding their child's starting points or provide regular feedback.

need to do better?

n The childminder promotes children's communication and language ability well. She uses lively conversations to help children develop their language skills. The childminder uses a clear voice to model vocabulary and repeats words to extend children's understanding through a range of activities. For example, as they read an interactive book together, the childminder points to the image of an animal and asks children to identify the sound that it would make. n The behaviour of the children in the setting is good. The childminder helps children to understand what acceptable behaviour is. For instance, when children want to play with the same toy, the childminder calmly speaks to the children and encourages them to share. She praises the children for their efforts of being kind to one another. As a result, children learn the rules and boundaries of behaviours. n The environment is warm and friendly for children to attend. Children have

secure attachments with the childminder, who is attentive to their personal needs. For example, she provides comfort to the children as they become tired before their nap. The emotional support the childminder gives children helps them to gain confidence and a good sense of well-being. n The childminder provides a range of learning experiences that the children enjoy, such as caring for the animals, art activities and singing nursery rhymes. However, sometimes learning opportunities do not suitably challenge children to ensure that they always have purposeful opportunities to develop their curiosity

However, the childminder does not consistently base activities on precise assessments of what individual children are capable of. She does not always reflect on what children need to learn next in order to plan challenging and interesting activities. n The childminder knows the children and their families well. She finds out from parents about children's care routines and follows these throughout the day. As a result, children feel happy and comfortable attending. However, she still does not consistently gather detailed information from parents to make prompt initial

assessments of children's development on entry to her setting. n The childminder's self-evaluation process is not yet effective. The childminder does not involve parents, children or other professionals on a regular basis to clearly target areas for improvement to enhance the standard of her care and learning for children.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder maintains a safe environment and ensures appropriate measures are in place to keep children safe when outside of the house. She has attended annual training to refresh her knowledge and awareness of the responsibilities she has around safeguarding. She implements her policies and procedures effectively to protect children from the risk of harm. The childminder is aware of wider safeguarding issues and how to recognise the signs and symptoms of abuse. She keeps accurate records and documentation, such as children's attendance. The childminder is confident with the procedures to follow to report any concerns that she may have regarding a child's welfare.

p.3

should:

n strengthen the systems for self-evaluation and seek the views of parents, children and other professionals to identify areas for development and continue to review any changes, in order to sharply drive improvement n encourage parents to contribute their own information to initial assessments of children's skills and knowledge, and strengthen partnerships to help to promote greater continuity between the setting and home n explore additional training opportunities to keep professional development up to date and to improve outcomes for children

p.3

should:

25 November 2019 n sharpen the practice of ongoing assessment to ensure it is consistently used to inform the planning of activities that focus on children's precise learning needs.
