p.1

The provision is good

Children are happy, settled and very comfortable in their surroundings. They have a real sense of achievement, for example as they proudly point out their artwork, that include examples of their early letter forming and name writing. Children enjoy looking at photographs of themselves taking part in different activities that are openly displayed. Some children are very confident. They sit next to the inspector and ask her to read to them. Younger children who are still in the process of settling in regularly look around to find a familiar face as they freely explore.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder arranges the working hours of her staff so that they are available, for some of the time, when children are present. This means that all her staff know the children equally well and children consistently have someone familiar to go to. Children are encouraged to join each other in activities, where they learn to share and take turns.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder is quick to assess any possible risk to children in the setting. She notifies Ofsted of incidents that may impact on childminding and takes action to eliminate the potential risk. Children are well supervised and there are no areas where they cannot be seen. This helps to ensure children's safety.

need to do better?

n The childminder provides a dedicated play area for the children she cares for. The purpose-built outbuilding is a well-presented learning environment. The childminder plans and provides a wide variety of resources and play opportunities for children. There is a lot of free space for children to move around independently within the building and they also have access to the back garden. n The design of the storage and layout of the room enables children of all ages to safely select resources for themselves. However, one of the tables used is too high for the youngest children. Their chin is level with the table top and they struggle to reach the paint they want. This hinders their participation. n The childminder and her staff are keen to encourage children to develop their language and communication skills. They promote a fondness for stories, songs and rhymes. Older children join in the songs and retell stories in their own

words. Younger children find a favourite picture book. They sit on a staff member's knee, help to turn pages and point to the illustrations. n The childminder and her staff work very well as a team. They have worked closely with the local authority and each other to improve their observations of children's progress. They confidently identify what children need to learn next. Workloads are manageable. For instance, staff are given time away from the children to help them keep their assessments up to date.

p.2

need to do better?

16 October 2019 n The childminder observes staff practice and meets regularly with them to discuss their work and training opportunities. However, training has been largely focused on mandatory requirements. The childminder recognises the need to identify training that will help them to continue to improve their overall teaching practice for the benefit of all children. n Children are confident in following instructions. They repeat new words they hear, such as 'sweetcorn' and 'tomato puree', and use the words later in their own discussions. This shows that children have good listening skills, understand what is being said and are extending the number of words in their vocabulary. n Children are independent and manage their personal care well. They know to get a drink when they are thirsty and they wash and dry their hands at appropriate times. For example, before making and eating their pizzas. n Children are well behaved, courteous and friendly towards others. They are

developing good relationships with each other and have the skills they need to be confident learners. n Parents are kept well informed about their children's development. They are provided with ideas about what they can do at home to support their children's ongoing development. The childminder and her staff are on hand to answer any questions parents may have. n The childminder makes good use of additional funding, to aid children's individual learning needs.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder knows when to notify Ofsted of significant events and takes immediate action to protect children and ensure their safety. The childminder and her staff attend regular safeguarding training. They confidently answer questions about wider issues, such as radicalisation and extremism. They have the knowledge to act quickly should they feel a child is at risk of harm or abuse. The childminder implements robust recruitment procedures to help ensure that adults working with children are suitable. The setting is secure and no unauthorised persons can enter or leave the premises unnoticed.

should:

n explore ways to strengthen the good teaching practice even further and help children make more rapid progress n make sure that furniture is of a suitable size for all children.
