p.1

The provision is good

The well-qualified childminder has very high expectations for children. She provides a homely, clean and stimulating learning environment that contributes towards meeting children's individual needs. The childminder builds strong relationships with the children and gets to know them and their families well. She is a positive role model. The childminder is aware of children's different experiences and how these may impact on their behaviour. She provides lots of opportunities to support all children to share and take turns. Children's behaviour is good, taking account of their age and level of understanding. They learn to say 'please' and 'thank you'. Children show that they feel safe as they move around the childminder's home, making choices in their play. However, opportunities for younger children to independently access books are limited. This means their understanding and enjoyment of stories are not maximised.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder works closely with parents to establish a good understanding of children's capabilities before they start at the setting. The childminder uses this information to plan effectively for children's individual needs and interests. The childminder offers activities and resources that capture children's imaginations and promote their learning. For example, she adapts activities to incorporate their favourite characters. However, children are occasionally distracted by unnecessary background noise, which pulls their focus from learning and play. The childminder reflects on her practice and identifies areas to improve. She puts a strong emphasis on professional development to help the continual improvement of the setting. She has recently gained a relevant early years level 6 qualification. This helps to contribute to the good learning environment that children benefit from.

n Teaching is good. The childminder tracks children's achievements in their learning, including through the progress check for children aged between two and three years. This helps her identify any gaps in children's learning so that interventions can be put in place to close these gaps swiftly. Children learn many key skills and are well prepared for the next stage of their education. n The childminder encourages children to undertake simple tasks, such as helping to tidy toys away. Children receive regular praise and encouragement, which helps raise their self-esteem and ensure that they feel valued. Children enjoy learning outdoors. They have many opportunities to be active, such as running, climbing and throwing balls, to promote their physical well-being. n Children's emerging language is fostered very well. They are making good progress in their speaking skills. The childminder provides many opportunities

for children to develop their vocabulary and consolidate their understanding. Children really enjoy singing time. They show their excitement and

Children clap and cheer after they finish each song, showing they are proud of their achievements. n The childminder provides children with many creative activities, such as sticking and painting. Overall, she promotes children's literacy development. For example, she encourages children to make marks to help support their early writing skills. However, younger children do not have enough opportunities to select and look at books independently in order to extend their early reading skills. n The childminder provides effective opportunities for children's mathematical development. She uses careful questioning, such as, 'Can you find me one more?' to help children develop an understanding of quantity. However, due to the background noise of a television, children occasionally lose focus and miss opportunities to extend their learning.

need to do better?

n Children now have more opportunities to develop their skills in using technology and all electronic resources are charged, ready for use. Younger children have great fun investigating and operating pretend telephones. They take great delight in pushing the buttons to make the music play and lights flash on and off. n The childminder makes good use of local services and attractions and this helps to expand children's knowledge of the local community. Children spend time outside every day, either in the well-resourced garden or walking to visit local parks, toddler groups and the library. n Children are learning how to develop healthy lifestyles. For example, they immediately go to wash their hands when the childminder asks if they want a snack. Children are provided with healthy and nutritious meals and snacks. The childminder talks to them about the importance of healthy food and teeth cleaning. n Parents' written views state how satisfied they are with the warm and caring

atmosphere the childminder provides. They say their children are extremely happy and eager to attend the setting. The childminder fully understands the requirement to monitor the work of any assistants.

Safeguarding

The childminder has a good knowledge of the possible indicators of abuse and how to respond if she has any concerns about children's welfare. She has completed relevant training to help enhance her understanding of safeguarding issues and changes in legislation. The childminder is committed to providing a safe environment for children. She carries out daily checks to ensure that resources and equipment are suitable and safe for children to use.
