Inspection of Berries Childcare Elmwood Primary School, Elm Street,Middleton, Manchester, Lancs. M24 2EG

p.1

This provision does not meet requirements

n The manager does not evaluate the quality of provision effectively. Although she is aware of some strengths and areas for development, she has failed to identify and address some weaknesses. As a result, there are several breaches of requirements. n The manager, who is also the designated safeguarding lead, does not have a strong enough knowledge of safeguarding issues and procedures. She does not understand the procedures to follow should there be an allegation against a member of staff, nor does she have regard for the 'Prevent' duty. Her lack of knowledge reflects throughout the staff, who also do not understand these aspects of safeguarding practice and procedure. This leaves children at risk of harm. n The manager has not ensured that there is a member of staff who holds a current paediatric first-aid certificate available and on site at all times. While the manager does have this necessary training, she regularly attends meetings

outside of the club. During these times, children are vulnerable as they do not have a suitable adult to administer first aid if needed. n The manager has not appropriately risk assessed the main entrance to the club. Visitors to the club are not monitored or regulated until after they have gained access to the room where children play. There are no measures in place to prevent members of the public from quickly gaining access to the club. The manager has identified this issue. However, she has not put additional safety measures in place to minimise the risk to children. n The manager ensures that children's medication forms are robustly detailed and shared with parents. She takes extra steps to ensure staff members are aware of different children's medical needs. For example, she works in close partnership with parents to create confidential profiles which detail children's individual needs. This means that staff can take necessary steps to ensure all

children, including those with complex health needs, are always fully included. n Staff consider children's individual stages of development when organising and planning activities. They understand how to use their observations of children's play to challenge and engage them. Staff also have due regard for children's interests and opinions. They encourage children to share ideas for any resources or activities they would like, for example, by providing a 'suggestions box'.

p.2

This provision does not meet requirements

There were no children present when this inspection took place. The findings in this report are based on evidence gathered from discussions with those who care for the children and an inspection of the premises, equipment and relevant documentation. Where there are no children present, no judgement is made on the quality of the early years provision as there is no reliable evidence on which to assess its impact on children. The report states whether the provider continues to meet the requirements of registration.
