p.1

The provision is good

Children are happy and confident during their time with the childminder. The warm and welcoming environment supports them to choose their own play and become engrossed in what they are doing. Children form secure attachments with the childminder which help them feel safe. They are independent but happily ask for help when they need it. Children respond quickly to simple boundaries and understand the daily routines. The childminder has high expectations of what children can do for themselves.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder provides good support for children's learning. She uses their play and planned activities to help children practise new skills. The childminder introduces new ideas and vocabulary as she talks to children. In the main, she gives children time to try doing things for themselves. However, sometimes she is too directive and children do not have enough opportunities to develop and extend their own ideas.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder uses support from the local authority to help her review some of her procedures. However, she is not always proactive in seeking fresh ideas and further developing her knowledge.

p.2

need to do better?

n Children develop their language and communication skills as they play. The childminder clearly repeats words and introduces new vocabulary. For example, she adds words to describe the size, shape and colour of the leaves they are using in their pictures. She gives children time to copy her and answer her questions. Children listen carefully and follow simple instructions. n The childminder knows children well. She regularly reviews their development to check they are making good progress and identify what they need to learn next. The childminder knows what children enjoy playing with and adds new items to extend their play. n Children are independent and learn to keep themselves safe. The childminder explains they must sit carefully on chairs so they do not fall off. Younger children understand the routine for nappy changing and delight in helping the childminder. n The childminder provides a good variety of resources that challenge different

aspects of children's learning. Role-play toys help children develop their imagination. Younger children start to use their early language skills to pretend to talk on the telephone. They explore resources that encourage them to try counting, sorting and matching colours. n Children learn to solve problems for themselves. The childminder helps them to notice that a lid will not shut because the container is too full. She then gives

7 November 2019 them time to think and children are able to solve the problem by removing items until the lid closes. Children show determination as they keep looking for toys that they need to complete a puzzle. n The childminder works in partnership with parents. She regularly shares details of what children have been doing during the day. Parents talk about the favourite toys children like to play with and the places they have visited. The childminder discusses any concerns about children and agrees with parents the variety of foods children will eat during the day. Parents are very pleased with the care the childminder offers. n The childminder provides craft activities that help children develop confidence in using paintbrushes and glue. In the main, children have time to try out using different brushes and colours of paint. However, the childminder sometimes gives too many directions about how to do an activity. As a result, children are

not able to fully develop their own ideas. n The childminder completes essential training to keep her skills up to date. However, she is not proactive in researching new ideas to support focused professional development.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder has a good knowledge of how to recognise concerns about children's welfare. She understands the procedures to follow should she have concerns and need to seek help for children and their families. The childminder has used training to make sure the information she has is up to date. She knows how to respond to an allegation against her or a member of her family. The childminder monitors older children when they are using the internet and asks them questions about who they are making contact with.

p.3

should:

n provide more opportunities for children where they can use resources in their own way to develop their own ideas n use a variety of different professional development activities to seek new ideas and further strengthen the quality of teaching.
