and young people since the most recent full inspection
This home was judged good at the last full inspection. At this interim inspection, Ofsted judges that it has improved effectiveness.
p.1
and young people since the most recent full inspection
Since the last inspection, the manager has been registered with Ofsted. She has brought in several changes that have helped to improve young people’s quality of care. As a result of her strong leadership, the two requirements and one recommendation raised at the last inspection have been met.
p.1
and young people since the most recent full inspection
The manager has made improvements to the staff recruitment procedure. Consequently, all new staff who work in the home are now safely recruited.
p.1
and young people since the most recent full inspection
All staff who were required to complete a level 3 diploma in residential childcare have now achieved the qualification. Inspection report children’s home: SC470457 2 Some parts of the home have been redecorated. As a result of these improvements, it is now homelier and well equipped to meet young people’s needs.
p.1
and young people since the most recent full inspection
Since the last inspection, one young person has moved out of the home. The young person experienced a well-planned move to semi-independence and has been able to maintain positive links with the staff. This continued support has enabled her to approach the next stage in her life with confidence.
p.2
and young people since the most recent full inspection
The manager is a strong advocate for the young people in her care. In recent weeks, there have been increasing concerns regarding a young person’s activity when they have been away from the home. The manager has worked tirelessly to support and safeguard this young person. This has included escalating concerns when she has felt that responses from other professionals have been too slow and ineffective.
p.2
and young people since the most recent full inspection
Staff help young people to re-engage in education. For example, when one young person arrived to live at the home she had been out of school for some time. Since coming to the home, she has regularly attended school and recently achieved eight GCSEs. This positive approach to learning promotes young people to be aspirational for their future.
p.2
and young people since the most recent full inspection
Staff ensure that young people’s complex needs are understood. Staff follow clearly written risk assessments to help them to keep young people safe.
p.2
and young people since the most recent full inspection
The manager has worked closely with the police and arranged for them to visit and carry out work with young people about understanding the risks associated with gangs and knife crime. This well-coordinated approach has helped young people to be increasingly safe.
p.2
and young people since the most recent full inspection
Incidents when staff are required to physically intervene to safeguard young people are very low and the registered manager’s oversight of these is timely. However, there is no process for the review of these incidents when the manager has been directly involved. This omission means that on the rare occasion this occurs, there is no independent review of this practice to safeguard the young person and staff. Inspection report children’s home: SC470457 3

Information about this inspection
Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the differences made to the lives of children and young people. They watched how professional staff work with children and young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care provided. Wherever possible, they talked to children and young people and their families. In addition, the inspectors have tried to understand what the children’s home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people whom it is trying to help, protect and look after.
