p.1

The provision is good

Children form secure attachments with the childminder, who provides a calm, caring and nurturing environment. Children show growing confidence as they make choices about their play. They happily chat about their favourite toys, and the childminder helps them gain an understanding of what makes them unique. The childminder links closely with parents to gather information about each child's needs, which she uses effectively to plan for children's individual learning.

p.2

The provision is good

Children have fun and enjoy a good range of stimulating activities which are geared to their individual interests and abilities. For example, the childminder introduces songs and rhymes when children begin dancing, and children join in enthusiastically. Children's communication skills are supported well through the childminder's positive interaction and introduction of new vocabulary.

p.2

The provision is good

Children play together well and show consideration towards others. The childminder's clear and consistent messages help support young children in learning to manage their behaviour. The childminder reviews her provision effectively. For example, she takes positive action to reduce risks to children in her home and when on outings.

need to do better?

n Children make good progress in their learning. They learn and develop across a wide range of stimulating activities and experiences. The childminder knows children well and continually adapts her teaching to help children move on to the next step in their learning. For example, she extends a song and rhyme activity to incorporate counting and number to support children's mathematical development. Children have fun as they explore musical instruments. For example, they play with the shakers and excitedly sing along to a favourite song about dinosaurs, exploring rhyme and rhythm. n Children are happy, settled and eager to learn. The childminder is sensitive to the children's needs, which fosters their security and emotional well-being. Children build warm, trusting relationships and are well behaved. For example, they eagerly find the 'red bricks' to put in the basket at tidy-up time and help others, saying, 'I'll get it', when a brick is missed. The childminder celebrates

children's achievements, which boosts their confidence and self-esteem successfully. Children learn the benefits of a healthy life and the childminder supports their physical development well. For example, children enjoy daily outdoor play and exercise through visits to local parks to run, climb, swing and slide in the fresh air. They show good levels of independence, such as washing their hands and peeling their own fruit at snack time. This helps them learn how to manage tasks for themselves.

p.2

need to do better?

5 November 2019 n Children enjoy their play and, overall, the childminder makes a good range of resources easily accessible for them to choose. However, the books provided are generally geared towards younger children and do not offer older children enough challenge. Children have fun as they prod, press and manipulate dough. They use their imagination well as they create dinosaur eggs and dinosaurs. The childminder continually talks to children, describing what they are doing, and she introduces new language. She repeats words correctly to help support children's pronunciation effectively. Children have some chances to learn about technology and the world they live in. However, they do not have full opportunities to explore objects and investigate how things work, to help develop their understanding of the world further. n The childminder communicates effectively with parents to keep them well informed about their children's care, learning and development. This contributes

towards a consistent approach to meeting children's needs. For example, she shares tips to help parents support their children's speech at home and provides suggestions on healthy packed lunches for children. The childminder continually reflects on ways to improve her provision. She strongly values the views of parents, such as asking for ideas on ways she can support their children further.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder has a good understanding of the signs and symptoms that may indicate a child is at risk of harm. She is confident about the procedures to keep children safe and knows what to do if she has any concerns. The childminder has recently completed training to update her knowledge of the 'Prevent' duty. She has a clear safeguarding policy and procedure in place, which she shares with parents to inform them of her responsibility to keep children safe.

p.3

should:

n develop the resources provided to challenge and extend older children's early literacy skills further n increase opportunities for children to explore objects and investigate why things happen and how things work, to help develop their understanding of the world further.
