p.1

The provision is good

The childminder ensures that children have access to a good range of toys and resources that link to their interests. Children choose resources freely and enjoy playing together. During activities, the childminder teaches them how to consider the needs of each other. For example, older children learn to take turns at pretending to be a shopkeeper, cash register operator and a customer while playing 'shops'. They eagerly repeat this activity several times and show good levels of cooperation.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder is caring and nurturing. She has a good understanding of how to support younger children's care needs. For instance, she offers comfort and reassurance to babies to help them develop confidence in settling into new routines. Children settle quickly in the childminder's care and build close and affectionate relationships with her. The childminder is very responsive to children's individual needs. She works closely with parents to follow children's home routines. The childminder is approachable and encourages families to share regular feedback. She uses this information well to identify improvements and to maintain the quality of her childcare.

need to do better?

n Children, including those who speak English as an additional language, make good and steady progress from their starting points. They develop good skills that help them to be ready for the move on to the next stage in their learning. n The childminder follows children's lead and joins in enthusiastically with their play. However, at times, she asks children many questions, which distracts children from thinking independently and developing their own ideas. n The childminder provides a broad range of books that appeal to the different ages of the children. Children show great delight as they choose which books they want to read. For instance, they listen to stories with the childminder and use picture books to make up their own stories. n Children enjoy developing their early mathematical skills. For example, they work out how many coins they need to pay for the toys in the pretend shop. n The childminder observes children's play and plans activities that follow their

interests. However, she does not make effective use of the information she gathers to help monitor children's progress from when they first start. n Children manage small tasks and are learning to be independent. For instance, they tidy away resources and put on their shoes before outside play. n The childminder obtains information from parents about children's interests and learning at home as part of her induction arrangements. She plans settling-in visits prior to children starting to attend. The childminder gives children time to become familiar with their surroundings and build positive relationships.

need to do better?

7 November 2019 n The childminder understands the importance of supporting children's physical skills to promote their well-being and good health. For example, she takes children on visits to parks and wildlife gardens for them to enjoy exciting physical challenges. She supports the youngest children as they begin to stand and take their first steps. During song times, older children create their own physical exercises for the other children to copy. n The childminder has implemented successful ways to share information about children's learning and development with parents. She informs parents about the activities she plans and how they can support children further. n The childminder has a positive attitude to improving her setting and developing her knowledge and skills. For instance, she has recently completed training relating to why challenging behaviour may occur. The childminder deals calmly with incidents of challenging behaviour, using age-appropriate strategies to help
