p.1

The provision is good

Babies and children are very happy and well settled in the childminder's home. She provides an exceedingly welcoming and nurturing environment. Children establish excellent relationships with the childminder. They are confident and independent learners and display high levels of emotional well-being. Older children are superb role models for younger children. They develop a mature understanding of the needs of others. For example, they know that they cannot play with small resources when babies are nearby, because babies could choke on them. Children's behaviour is exemplary.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder has high expectations of what children can achieve. She plans a wide range of challenging activities, based on children's interests and next steps in learning. The childminder knows what she wants children to learn and provides exciting activities to help them to make good progress. For example, she uses pumpkins and songs to help children to further enhance their mathematical development. Children show high levels of engagement in all that they do. They confidently count from one to six, share the pumpkins equally into two sets and know how many are left when one is taken away. This supports children to develop a good understanding of simple mathematical concepts, in readiness for future learning and school.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder seeks detailed information from parents about children's learning and development when they first start at the setting. This helps her to assess children's development accurately from the outset. The childminder tracks children's progress to help her to quickly identify any gaps in their learning and seek external intervention, if necessary. Children make good progress. n Children relish the time they spend outdoors. The childminder provides them with continual access to the garden so that they can play outside whenever they want to. She plans outdoor activities effectively to enable children to access different areas of learning. For example, children practise writing their names on the chalkboard, play football and look for insects. Children are thrilled when they find beetles and flies. They explain, 'Once, we found a ladybird on the slide'. This helps to enhance learning for children who prefer to play outside. Children

are highly motivated, confident and independent learners. n Babies move rapidly towards the resources that excite them. They pull themselves up to a standing position and move along the furniture to access the toys they want to play with. This motivates babies to become mobile. Babies seek out natural materials in treasure baskets, which they explore using their senses. They squeal with delight when they discover that they can make sounds

30 October 2019 by banging two objects together. n Children develop a can-do approach and show exceptionally high levels of independence. Babies learn to feed themselves, with caring and sensitive support from the childminder. Older children independently manage their own personal needs, especially in relation to health and self-care. n The childminder provides children with many opportunities to explore a wide range of media and materials. For example, children make models out of dough, such as spiders, snails and people. However, there are times when art and craft activities are too adult led. They focus on the end product, rather than the learning that is taking place. This does not help children to represent their own thoughts and ideas to further enhance their already good creative skills and imagination. n Children learn about the importance of healthy eating in a variety of ways. For example, the childminder encourages them to make healthy choices. Children

choose from a variety of toppings, such as peppers, ham, cheese and mushrooms, when they make pizzas for lunch. This contributes to children's good health and well-being. n Partnerships with parents, other early years providers and schools are strong. The childminder shares children's learning and progress through daily diaries, photographs and observations. She works closely with parents to help them to support children's learning at home. This helps to promote good levels of consistency and continuity for all children. Parents comment that the childminder is 'superb' and 'amazing' and that 'children have a memorable childhood in her care'. n The childminder seeks out new information and undertakes relevant training to help to improve her practice. However, she does not make the best use of ongoing self-evaluation to identify precise targets for development to help to raise the quality of the setting to an outstanding level.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder is vigilant regarding children's safety. She has a secure understanding of the action to take should she have concerns about the safety or welfare of a child. She knows how to identify signs that could indicate children are being exposed to extreme views or behaviours. The childminder attends regular safeguarding training to ensure she is aware of new child protection guidance, legislation and practice. She carries out rigorous risk assessments to ensure children play safely.

p.3

should:

30 October 2019 n provide a wider range of opportunities for children to express their own thoughts and ideas to help to enhance their good creative skills even further n enhance the way in which self-evaluation is used to shape ongoing improvement plans to help to raise the quality of the setting to an outstanding level.
