p.1

The provision is good

The childminder provides a homely environment where children show a strong sense of belonging. Children who have recently started at the provision settle quickly. This is supported by the childminder's sensitive approach to helping children to get used to their new surroundings. She delivers her expectations for behaviour in a clear and age-appropriate manner. Children respond well and behaviour is good. They show that they are happy and content in the childminder's care.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder interprets babies' wants and needs successfully as they communicate with her through babbling and gestures. She encourages children to practise their handling skills, for example through operating interactive toys and building towers with bricks. However, children are not always supported to extend their good mathematical counting skills during play.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder uses effective strategies to help children learn how to manage their feelings and behaviour. She ensures that children experience a range of social situations to help them learn how to adapt their behaviour and feel confident in busier, external group activities. The childminder seeks feedback from parents and older children. However, she now needs to refine her self-evaluation in order to plan precise areas for improvement and give a sharp focus to her professional development.

p.2

The provision is good

Children enjoy healthy, nutritious meals and snacks prepared by the childminder. However, the childminder has not considered more effective ways to help younger children to develop their awareness of hygiene practices and how this contributes towards their good health.

need to do better?

n Children are happy and settled in the childminder's home. They establish good attachments with her and seek her interactions throughout the day. This helps to develop their confidence and self-esteem. Children learn about appropriate ways in which to behave because the childminder promotes consistent boundaries. This is demonstrated when she carefully intervenes and encourages young children to take turns with resources. n Children's communication skills are encouraged well. The childminder supports their language development through positive interaction and listening to them. She introduces new words in everyday activities to extend children's knowledge and uses repetition to reinforce their learning. This helps children to become skilful communicators as they confidently talk about what they are doing. n The childminder encourages children to explore early mathematics, for example

5 November 2019 sizes and colours. She finds ways to promote children's mathematical development, following their interests. For example, children confidently build structures using different-coloured bricks. However, the childminder sometimes misses opportunities to maximise their emerging understanding of counting and quantities. n The childminder has high expectations of all children. Children learn about nature and caring for the environment, for example when they visit a horse sanctuary and adopt a horse together. They visit places in the local community, attend playgroups and benefit from many opportunities to be active. This further supports children's social skills as they play and interact with others in larger groups. Overall, children have many opportunities to develop an understanding of healthy lifestyles. For example, they benefit from eating well-balanced and nutritious meals. However, routine practice for handwashing is not always

consistent. n The childminder has established effective relationships with parents and gathers their views through questionnaires. She regularly shares information with them about their children's progress through daily discussions and invites comments in children's learning journeys. Furthermore, she offers advice and guidance about how parents can support their children's learning at home. However, the childminder does not regularly review her training and development needs as part of her self-evaluation process. n The childminder has adequate systems, equipment and insurance in place to ensure children's safety when on outings and travelling in the car. She carries emergency contact details and a first-aid bag. Children are taught to develop awareness of how to keep themselves safe. For example, they learn about the importance of staying together when out in the community. Children remain safe in the childminder's care.

p.3

need to do better?

n The childminder supports children's move to school with care. She develops close links with other settings that children attend and shares progress with key people. This promotes a joined-up approach to the care and education of children.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder attends training to keep her knowledge of safeguarding up to date. She implements the guidance that she receives and shares it with parents, when appropriate. Through training she has learned about local safeguarding issues and the arrangements for making referrals. The childminder knows the signs of abuse and neglect. Parents are fully aware of her safeguarding policies. All adults in the household have been vetted and know what action to take should an allegation be made against them or anyone else living in the household. Full written risk assessments are completed and reviewed to promote children's safety and well-being.

should:

n enhance self-evaluation to clearly highlight the strengths and weaknesses of current practice and give a sharp focus to professional learning to raise practice even further n provide more consistent opportunities for younger children to develop their awareness of how effective hygiene practices contribute towards their good health n increase opportunities for children to learn about mathematical concepts during their play and everyday routines.
