The provision is good

The childminder provides a warm, welcoming environment for children and their families. Children choose from a range of good-quality resources which provide them with interesting play opportunities, both inside and outdoors. The childminder interacts positively with children during their play and shows interest in what they are doing. She responds to children's individual care needs well. She recognises when they are tired or hungry and adapts routines to meet their needs. Children settle well and demonstrate a strong sense of belonging in the childminder's care. For example, they put their belongings, such as shoes, bags and artwork, into their own box.

need to do better?

n The childminder has a clear and ambitious vision for her setting. She has high expectations for what all children can achieve. Overall, she provides high-quality care and education. The childminder has a solid understanding of her key roles and responsibilities. However, on occasions, she does not always encourage children's critical thinking skills to support them in developing their own ideas. n The childminder uses each child's starting points, observations and assessments to plan activities. She considers what it is children need to learn and builds upon their learning. For instance, children show high levels of concentration and perseverance as they learn to use scissors during a collage activity. The childminder adapts activities to enable children to participate at their own level. Children remain focused and engaged fully in their learning. n Children, including those who speak English as an additional language, make

4 November 2019 help to prepare for lunchtime. n The childminder provides good opportunities for children to develop their understanding of diversity and the wider world. For example, she plans outings within the community and encourages children to discover and use multicultural resources during their play. n The childminder places a clear focus on keeping her knowledge and skills up to date through regular training opportunities. She completed training recently on the importance of children's home learning. As a result, she shares ideas with parents to carry on learning activities at home. n The childminder evaluates her practice effectively and supports the practice of her assistant. She uses her own observations and feedback from parents and children to identify future improvements for her setting. For instance, she installed a ball slide down the steps in the garden, based on the children's interest in resources that rotate.

n The childminder meets up with other childminders. Together they share ideas, which helps them to develop the range of activities they have available and organise exciting outings for children. This promotes children's sense of community, confidence and social skills when out in the wider world.

Safeguarding

The childminder has a secure understanding of how to recognise children who may be at risk of harm.
