p.1
The provision is good
The childminder has good settling-in procedures tailored to each child's needs. She works closely with parents to establish what their children can already do, which helps her to plan effectively for their learning needs from the outset. Children have secure attachments to the childminder and show a deep sense of belonging. The childminder is a positive role model. Children learn how to keep safe and understand her rules. They demonstrate positive attitudes to learning and concentrate well on their chosen activities. Children behave well. They readily share toys and take turns amicably in group activities.
p.2
The provision is good
Children have easy access to a wide range of resources so they can choose what they would like to play with next. This helps to support their growing independence. The childminder knows the children well, providing activities that are based on their interests. She joins in their play and asks questions that help to build on what they know and can already do. Children are captivated by well-read stories. They listen intently and join in enthusiastically. The childminder reads the text, pausing for them to complete the sentence or say the missing word. This helps to develop children's vocabulary and their enjoyment of books and reading.

need to do better?
n The childminder is effective at supporting children's communication and language skills. She models clear language when talking to the children and sensitively corrects their pronunciation. Children enjoy learning new words. The childminder models thinking as she encourages them to work out what words such as 'gloomy' and 'stumble' mean, extending their vocabulary. n Parental feedback is very positive. Parents are pleased with the care and education their children receive. They speak highly of the childminder and the care she offers to their children. They say, 'We feel very relaxed and comforted about leaving our child. We are very happy with the care and activities and would not hesitate to recommend her.' n Children enjoy a wide variety of opportunities to visit the local community or attend local groups. They regularly go to the library and join in activity groups, such as 'rhyme time', which supports their early literacy skills.

need to do better?
n The childminder observes children closely to find out what interests them. She talks to parents to find out what their children can do at home. She makes regular assessments of what children can do and uses this information to plan for the next steps in their learning. Occasionally, the childminder does not provide enough challenge for more-able children to extend their learning to a higher level. n Children are making good progress in their learning. They are inquisitive and are developing good communication skills. Children enjoy demonstrating what they

need to do better?
30 October 2019 know and sharing their ideas and experiences. They thoroughly enjoy role play and re-enact familiar scenarios. For example, children make 'gumbo soup' after heating it up in the toy microwave. They add 'strawberries' to the soup and competently count to eight. n The childminder makes good use of regular opportunities to keep her knowledge up to date. However, she does not focus her professional development precisely enough on developing an expert knowledge of teaching. She has not fully explored ways to continually build on the good quality of her teaching to help children make the best possible progress. n The childminder regularly evaluates her practice. She seeks feedback from parents and children to help her continually develop her setting and ensure children receive good-quality care and learning. The childminder works well with other settings to ensure that children gain the skills they need to be ready for
p.2
Safeguarding
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
p.3
Safeguarding
The childminder has a good knowledge of child protection procedures and of the possible risks to children's well-being. She understands her responsibility to report any concerns she may have about a child in her care to the appropriate agencies. The childminder frequently refreshes her knowledge of safeguarding, completing research and training to ensure she is up to date. She demonstrates that she knows how to manage allegations of harm or abuse against her or anyone who lives in her home. This has a positive impact on children's safety.

should:
