Inspection of Kids Hub North Acton Pavilion, North Acton Playing Fields, Eastfield Road, London W3 0JF

p.1

This provision does not meet requirements

The manager, who also owns the club, is passionate and committed to her role. Although she has effective systems in place to help keep children safe from harm, she has not ensured that she has a deputy to take charge in her absence. Staff working in the club are qualified and have high expectations for the children, including those who speak English as an additional language. Staff plan a variety of stimulating experiences, such as a topic based on children's interest in pirates. The activities they provided for this topic enhanced children's imaginative play and helped them to learn new skills, such as how to use maps. However, at times, staff do not support children to explore resources in their own ways or give them enough time to complete activities to their satisfaction.

This provision does not meet requirements

Children's behaviour and attitudes are good. They enjoy activities such as group games and discussions, which support their relationships with others. Older children are patient and kind as they play with younger children and help them with tasks, such as putting on their coats for outdoor play. Children develop secure relationships with the caring staff, which helps them to feel confident and safe.

n The manager has not ensured that there is a named deputy to lead the provision in her absence. However, the club staff know the children well and understand how to keep them safe. Therefore, children's welfare is not significantly compromised. n The club offers bilingual provision and staff talk to children using both English and French. Staff provide a range of language-rich activities, such as reading stories and singing songs with children. They name resources and describe actions during activities, to help children learn a broad range of words. This supports children's communication skills effectively. n The manager actively seeks parents' and children's views and looks for advice from other childcare professionals to help her evaluate the provision. She makes effective plans to enhance children's learning and enjoyment. For example, she has broadened the range of construction toys, to help children explore their

interest in designing and making. n Staff are kind and friendly towards children. They get to know children well and form secure relationships with them. This helps children to feel confident and secure in the club. Children appear happy when they arrive in the morning and quickly settle down to play. They say that they enjoy the activities and make new friends at the club. n Staff observe children and listen to their views about the activities and resources they prefer. The quality of staff's interactions with children is generally good.

24 October 2019 However, on occasion during adult-led activities, staff rush children to finish their work or do not allow them to explore the resources using their own ideas. n Parents say that their children are enthusiastic about attending the club and are motivated to try out the various activities offered. They comment that the manager keeps them well informed about the topics and experiences planned and that staff provide daily feedback on their children's experiences. This helps to provide good continuity between home and the club. n Children are confident learners and choose independently from the resources and activities. They show high levels of interest and concentration in activities which interest them. For example, children experimented with mixing paints to create different colours. n Staff support healthy ways of life for children. For example, they work alongside parents to ensure children have a good variety of healthy choices in their lunch

boxes. Staff ensure that children play outdoors each day and they plan a range of games which encourage children to be physically active.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

Despite there being no deputy in post, other staff have had relevant safeguarding training and know about a wide range of safeguarding issues. They know how to recognise when children may be at risk from harm and understand how to report any concerns about children's welfare to the appropriate authorities. Staff understand the procedures to follow if they have concerns about the behaviour of adults working with children. Safer recruitment procedures ensure that adults working at the club are suitable to do so. The manager and staff assess risks to children and implement effective measures to minimise these. They talk to children about the rules and procedures in the club, to help children understand risks and learn how to keep themselves safe.
