The provision is good
The childminder adopts a warm and caring approach and places a high priority on ensuring all children are happy and settled. The day and activities are organised with children's individual needs in mind and they quickly decide what they would like to do. Children have a close relationship with the childminder and are confident despite only attending one day a week. She gives them the attention they need to help them settle and feel safe. Children thoroughly enjoy being outdoors and freely explore the activities made available. For example, children are intrigued by the stone which is stuck in the tube, and learn to use water to help make it move. The childminder follows children's interests and engages them well in conversation. For example, children show good levels of motivation as they describe and talk about the trains in the book. Although children enjoy counting and learn to recognise colours and shapes they show less interest in exploring quantity, measurement and

need to do better?
n The childminder is clearly motivated and enjoys the time she spends with children. She knows them well and provides a good range of experiences for their enjoyment and to help them progress. She uses a variety of topics, which are often linked to children's interests and the natural world, to motivate them to learn. n The childminder attends regular training and local childminding forums to keep her knowledge up to date. She makes good use of early years online resources to give her creative ideas about activities. She meets regularly with other childminders to help share ideas and extend practice. n The childminder places a key focus on introducing new words and concepts during her interactions with children to help promote their communication and language skills. She entices children to enjoy stories by using books with their favourite characters to encourage them to speak and reinforce learning.

need to do better?
n The childminder regularly observes and assesses children's learning and plans activities for their enjoyment and to help them make good progress. However, she does not always use what she knows about children's learning to help her provide activities with the highest level of challenge, in particular in mathematics, to help raise learning to a higher level. n The childminder works closely with parents from the start to find out about children's care needs, personality and development. She quickly identifies any children who need additional support and works effectively with parents to help close gaps in their learning. Parents report high levels of satisfaction and like the range of experiences on offer and are pleased with their children's progress. n The childminder provides meaningful first-hand experiences for children to learn

need to do better?
25 October 2019 about the natural world. For example, children visit the local nature reserve and farm and on daily walks consider the changing seasons and explore living things. However, although children begin to learn about the local environment they have fewer opportunities to learn about people and communities. n The childminder offers good opportunities for children to be outdoors in all weathers to promote their health and well-being. She places a sharp focus on extending children's physical skills. For example, children use tools such as tongs to help strengthen their fingers to support their early writing skills. n The childminder prioritises supporting children's personal, social and emotional development. Children behave well and learn to show care and concern for others and the pet dog. They have good opportunities to attend groups to mix with other children and increase their social skills in preparation for their next

Safeguarding
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

Safeguarding
There are robust procedures in place to ensure household members are suitable. The childminder clearly targets keeping her child protection and safeguarding training up to date and has a good understanding of child protection policies and procedures. She prepares the environment daily to ensure her home is safe and clean. The childminder uses effective risk assessments to ensure children are safe in the car and on outings. She helps children learn about how to manage possible risks, for example, the risks of fireworks and climbing and how to use tools safely.
