p.1

The provision is good

Children have lots of fun as they explore a wide range of activities in a safe environment. The childminder knows each child very well and uses their recent interest in pirates to offer carefully planned activities which promote their learning across all areas of the curriculum. Children enjoy sharing their experiences with others and show strong attachments and friendships with the childminder and others. They are very happy and include each other well in their play. The childminder has high expectations about what children can achieve and how they should behave. Children respond very well to this, developing a good attitude to learning and perseverance as they try out new skills. Cookery is a particular focus of the curriculum, which the childminder uses skilfully to support all areas of learning. Children enjoy cooking and tasting healthy foods, before sharing their masterpiece with parents. The childminder promotes home learning well by

need to do better?

n Children's current interest in the life of pirates has led to a wide range of fun and stimulating activities which engage and challenge them. For example, children develop pencil control as they colour treasure maps, enjoy early literacy as they talk about stories they read together and use their imagination to build a pirate ship out of wooden blocks. n Activities are moved on at a good pace to ensure children are engaged well. The childminder is aware of what each child can already achieve and generally plans activities to build on what they know. However, some activities can be too challenging for younger children. n Children have close friendships with others and visibly enjoy sharing their experiences and talking about what they have enjoyed doing at the weekend. Children respond positively to new activities and suggestions, eagerly accepting any challenges offered by the childminder as she sits alongside them.

p.2

need to do better?

n Children are very independent and enjoy taking responsibility, for example when choosing what to play with and when pouring their own drinks. Children enjoy being actively involved in preparing healthy meals and snacks, learning how to keep safe as they chop fruit with appropriate utensils. n The childminder has a good overall understanding of how children learn. She speaks with parents about children's current abilities and plans activities to promote their interests in all aspects of the curriculum. Their progress is monitored carefully, allowing the childminder to ensure any gaps in knowledge are recognised and supported quickly. n The childminder has worked very hard to evaluate her provision and enhance her professional development. This has had a highly positive impact on her

21 October 2019 ability to improve outcomes for children. She has attended a wide range of training opportunities and has used this to plan further activities and enhancements. The impact of her hard work is clearly visible and children benefit from her confidence and continual drive for improvement. n The childminder offers many opportunities for children to explore mathematics, for example when counting and subtracting pirate coins, considering weight and measure while making pizzas, and exploring written numbers and their meaning. Children benefit from having opportunities to use number during their play and do so with eagerness.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

Children are developing the skills they need to keep themselves safe. For example, they are supported by the childminder, who gives them gentle reminders about keeping safe when preparing food and encouraging them to tidy away toys when they have finished with them. The childminder supervises children carefully, while understanding the benefits of allowing them time to be independent. She attends relevant training, which helps her to be alert to child protection issues. The childminder has a good understanding of how to respond if she had concerns about a child, including how to make a referral to the relevant authorities if required.
