p.1

The provision is good

Children are settled and form secure attachments with the childminder. In the main, children use clear speech to communicate with their peers and adults. However, on some occasions, the childminder does not give children enough time to respond to questions. Children make independent choices about where to play and what to play with. Children interact well with each other, negotiating and cooperating in their play. They show compassion towards their friends, especially when they are hurt or upset.

p.2

The provision is good

Children learn about the importance of daily hygiene routines, such as washing hands before snack time and choosing healthy options at mealtimes. Children have lots of opportunities to develop a range of physical skills. For example, they climb across large equipment in local parks and use small precise movements to dress dolls. Children are well supported to develop their independence and self-care skills. For example, the childminder uses stories and props to support children's understanding of toilet training. The childminder provides children with lots of reassurance and encouragement. She helps children to understand that they will have accidents while they are learning.

need to do better?

n Children learn through an extensive range of activities and experiences. The childminder provides a good balance of adult-led and child-initiated play to support children's all-round development. Children's progress is monitored carefully. The childminder shares information with her co-minders to provide a consistent approach to children's ongoing play and learning. n Children show an increasing pride in their knowledge of shapes, number and colour. The childminder uses numerous activities to test children's knowledge, such as shape and colour displays and inset puzzles. However, the childminder does not always challenge and extend this knowledge to support their ongoing mathematical development. n The childminder is a positive role model to children. She gives children plenty of recognition of their achievements. This helps to develop high levels of self- esteem and confidence. Children are eager to learn. They show a great interest

Children learn right and wrong through clear explanations about their appropriate behaviour. n The childminder works in partnership with parents to provide a service that is flexible for parents and their children. She provides parents with regular updates about children's development. She has initiated professional relationships with other settings that children attend. However, the childminder does not always extend this partnership with parents and other settings to support a consistent

16 October 2019 approach to children's learning and development. n The childminder has a positive attitude towards developing her professional knowledge. She works well alongside her co-minders to provide a consistent approach to children's care and development. She shares information with them after completing training. She is eager to continue her professional development and increase the effectiveness of her practice for individual children. n Children encounter different experiences, carefully planned by the childminder, to broaden their understanding of the world around them. They visit local libraries, explore parks and open spaces and ride the bus and ferries. They experience different forms of transport and learn about the natural world and their local community.

p.2

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder has a clear understanding of her responsibility to protect children from harm. She attends regular training to keep her knowledge up to date. She works closely with her co-childminders to help children learn about how to keep themselves safe. The childminder maintains appropriate records to support children's safety and well-being, such as keeping accurate records of any accidents or medication administered while children are in her care. The childminder carefully assesses hazards both in her setting and when on outings. She makes sure any risks are minimised to keep children safe.
