p.1

The provision requires improvement

Overall, children settle well and feel content in the childminder's care. They are becoming independent and active learners. Children enjoy selecting their own resources and finding out how things work. The childminder knows individual children's capabilities and strives to move them on in their learning. Overall, she has high expectations for children and provides a range of resources and learning experiences across the curriculum to help them acquire the skills they need for their next stage of learning. However, she does not plan and organise the daily routines well enough to ensure that children's learning needs are met consistently. For example, on the day of the inspection, the childminder planned to take the children out to the park and got them ready to do so. However, she realised that she did not have the keys to her home and, as a result, the children had to stay indoors. They became disappointed and unsettled for a short period. Older children

listen to instructions well and use a good range of vocabulary. Younger children do not always get the chance to process information and respond to questions. Children have formed secure bonds with each other and behave well, overall.

need to do better?

n The childminder has attended training to improve her knowledge of safeguarding and child protection following a recent incident at the setting. However, she has not been effective enough in addressing all gaps in her skills and knowledge to achieve good standards in the setting. n The childminder includes the views of parents when evaluating the effectiveness of her practice. However, she does not seek and include the views of other early years professionals, such as her local authority early years advisers, to identify precisely where she can improve. n Overall, the childminder interacts well with children and provides opportunities for them to ask questions and build on their thinking and speaking skills. Nevertheless, she sometimes becomes overzealous and does not give younger children sufficient time to think and respond to questions. n The childminder forms secure attachments with children and attends well to

their care needs. She recognises the importance of toilet-training children in preparation for their move to nursery. She makes this enjoyable and reduces children's anxiety so even the youngest children are keen to be potty trained. n The childminder frequently shares information with parents about the progress their children are making and provides ideas to support home learning. This helps to create continuity in children's care and development. n Children make steady progress in their learning. Overall, the childminder designs her curriculum well, and monitors children's learning regularly to help her identify any learning gaps. She plans relevant activities to help close the gaps. n Children have sufficient opportunities to access all areas of learning within their

10 October 2019 play. The childminder sets up her play area well so that children can explore and build on what they already know. She also takes children to interesting places, such as to the local museum and farms, for them to see and play with things that they would not normally have at home. n Generally, the childminder communicates clear expectations for behaviour and encourages children to share and take turns. This helps children to learn what is expected of them. The childminder provides healthy food and encourages children to drink water regularly so that they remain hydrated and to help support their physical well-being.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder has a sound knowledge and understanding of child protection procedures and knows how to report any concerns regarding children's welfare. She is able to identify and knows what action to take if any child is likely to be at risk of exposure to extreme views and behaviours. The childminder checks her play areas well to remove any potential hazards to children's safety. She keeps required documentation on children and shares relevant information with parents to help promote children's welfare.
