p.1

The provision is good

The experienced and caring childminder has developed a good understanding of the early years foundation stage. Children are content, safe and secure in familiar surroundings, as the childminder builds on their interests with a stimulating range of activities. Children are able to use their initiative and follow their natural curiosity as learners. They happily and confidently seek out the toys and resources, initiating their own play and ideas. For example, children make a 'cup of tea' in the home corner and excitedly tell the childminder they are going to have cake as they pretend to mix ingredients. Children enjoy playing imaginatively together as they build a train track. The childminder has high expectations of children and interacts effectively with them. She joins in with children's play, asking open questions to support children's thinking skills. The childminder introduces mathematical language such as 'long' and 'short' as children try to link pieces of the train track

together. Children persevere and work out which pieces fit together through the gentle support and guidance the childminder offers. They are inquisitive and show enthusiasm and motivation to learn. Children stay focused and determined to complete tasks they are interested in.

need to do better?

n The childminder completes accurate assessments of children's development. She competently plans activities and experiences for children according to their level of development and interests. This helps to support children in the good progress that they make. However, the childminder does not gather detailed information from parents about what children can already do when they first start at the setting. Subsequently, the curriculum is not as informed as it could be in order to promote progress from the very beginning. n The childminder manages children's behaviour well. She offers clear and consistent reminders as children learn to share and take turns. As a result, children are beginning to manage their feelings and behaviour and are learning what is expected of them. n Children enjoy being creative. They excitedly explore different materials as they create pictures using glue and card. The childminder models how to spread the

glue on the paper and encourages children to independently select what they would like to use. She talks to them about colours and textures and introduces new vocabulary such as 'pipe cleaner' and 'feather'. n Children thoroughly enjoy sharing stories with the childminder. They eagerly turn the pages and talk about what they see in the pictures. Children show a love of books as they bring their favourites to the childminder, climbing on her knee so they can snuggle and read together. n The childminder is very sensitive to children's individual needs. She recognises when children are tired and need additional support to enjoy activities and

2 October 2019 experiences. She shows kindness and concern, offering cuddles and reassurance as children need. This supports children's emotional well-being and self-esteem effectively. n The childminder takes children to local playgroups and community activities. This supports children to develop appropriate social skills and helps build on their confidence and motivation in group situations. Additionally, these outings help to develop children's understanding of the wider world around them. n The childminder attends regular training to update her knowledge and skills. She has a comprehensive range of documentation and policies in place which underpin her good practice. The childminder fosters good links with other childminders and meets regularly with them to share ideas. n The childminder continually evaluates the quality of her work. She values the opinions from parents and children and uses the information she gains to make

improvements to her provision. Parents are very complimentary about the care and attention their children receive.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder demonstrates a good understanding of safeguarding issues, her responsibilities and the procedures to follow in the event of concerns arising. She has attended relevant training to strengthen her knowledge and skills regarding safeguarding matters. Furthermore, she holds a relevant first-aid qualification and maintains meticulous accident and medication documentation. Children's safety is monitored by the childminder as they play. This is reinforced by the frequent risk assessments she carries out and the daily checks she undertakes to ensure children are able to play in a safe and secure environment.
