Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: SC436372 1 SC436372
p.1
Cambian Childcare Ltd
Monitoring visit Inspected under the social care common inspection framework
p.1
Information about this children’s home
The home is registered to provide care and accommodation for up to six children and young people aged between nine and 17. The children and young people accommodated at the home may have previously experienced abuse, neglect or exclusion. The home offers medium- to long-term placements for children and young people. There is a new registered manager.
p.1
This monitoring visit
During a previous Ofsted monitoring visit in December 2018, some significant shortfalls were identified in relation to the leadership of the home and the home’s safety systems. The organisation took steps to move the young people out of the home because of the shortfalls. There have been no young people living in the home since then. The purpose of this monitoring visit was to ensure that the home is ready to accept new admissions.
p.1
This monitoring visit
A new registered manager was assessed as fit on the day of this visit. She has the skills to make sure that the home improves and to make sure that young people will be safe and protected.
p.1
This monitoring visit
The home is almost in a position where young people can be admitted, but some work is still being undertaken. The home is currently registered to care for six young people. There are only enough staff to care for two young people at present. The organisation is still working on a plan to build up the numbers of young people, alongside the development of the staff team.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Some staff members are not experienced, and many are still in their probationary period. The registered manager plans to make the best use of more experienced staff when young people are admitted. This will ensure that there is an appropriate level of competence and experience on each shift. Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: SC436372 2 Very few staff hold the relevant diploma qualification in line with the regulations. However, they are enrolled on the relevant course. One member of staff has not achieved the qualification within the necessary timescales, but there are plans in place to resolve this.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Some staff have not received training on how to protect young people from being sexually or criminally exploited. They will need to develop their knowledge in this area.
p.2
This monitoring visit
Some fire doors are not yet functioning properly, and work needs to be done on the home’s fire evacuation procedure because this is not clear. Risk assessments for higher risk areas of the building, such as the fire escape, are not yet in place.
p.2
This monitoring visit
A door alarm system, designed to alert staff when young people and staff leave their bedrooms, is currently not working. Further thought is needed about how the door alarm will be used. Good systems for maintaining and checking health and safety equipment are not yet established.
p.2
This monitoring visit
The organisation hopes that the final preparations will be finished within a few weeks. When the process is finished, the home will be able to admit young people.
p.2
This monitoring visit
The seven requirements set at the last inspection are all carried over. There has been no opportunity to evaluate progress because no young people have been living at the home. This is not a reflection of a lack of action from the provider.
p.2
This monitoring visit
The home looks much improved from the last inspection. It is homely and welcoming. Small details, such as additional low lighting and welcome baskets in young people’s bedrooms, will help young people to settle into the home.
