p.1

The provision is good

Children have fun with the childminder and enjoy exploring the environment. They form close bonds with the childminder and one another. The childminder plans a range of activities based on children's individual stages to build on their previous learning. She also takes account of children's learning styles. Recently, she has identified there are children attending who prefer to learn outside. She is in the process of extending the planning, particularly in her outdoor learning environment. Children generally demonstrate positive attitudes towards learning. However, on occasion, the childminder overdirects children during planned activities, particularly imaginative and creative experiences. This does not help to extend children's enthusiasm for learning as far as possible. However, children are confident and develop independence in managing their self-care. The childminder promotes appropriate risks as children play and learn. For example, she provides

opportunities for children to climb outdoors and encourages them to keep themselves safe. Younger children delight in feeding themselves and wiping their faces after mealtimes. Children's communication is promoted well. Younger children beam as they sing familiar nursery rhymes with the childminder and their peers. Children are developing good listening skills and respond well to instructions. This enables them to develop their understanding of the childminder's routine and what comes next. Children also enjoy listening to familiar stories and turning the pages of books. They use puppets to make stories interactive and thoroughly enjoy pretending to feed the monkey.

need to do better?

n The experienced and passionate childminder has a good understanding of her key roles and responsibilities. She has an ambitious vision for her setting and regularly attends training to enhance her professional development. As a result, children are happy attending and make good progress. n The environment is stimulating and welcoming. The curriculum builds on what children already know and the skills they need to develop next. The childminder plans a varied range of activities by considering each child's individual starting points and previous experiences. However, she does not always adapt her teaching as skilfully as possible. Occasionally, children do not always demonstrate the highest level of enthusiasm for the activities the childminder provides, such as small-world and craft activities. This is because children do not consistently have the opportunity to freely experiment with resources and test

their own ideas. n The childminder knows children very well. She uses settling-in sessions to find out about children's interests, routines and previous experiences. She uses this information effectively to plan for children's future learning. n Partnership working is successful. The childminder forms positive relationships

18 September 2019 with parents and works collaboratively with them. She builds strong links with local schools, which helps to support transitions. She also frequently networks with other childminders to share good practice. n The childminder introduces new learning concepts to children as they progress in their learning. For example, she teaches older children how to tell the time through a variety of mathematical activities. In turn, children are well prepared for the next stage of their learning, including school. n Self-evaluation is effective. The childminder evaluates the quality of her setting well and makes successful improvements to her provision. Recently, the childminder has reviewed her outdoor learning environment. She has identified that there is scope to elevate the experiences in the setting for children who prefer playing and learning outside, and she is currently working on this. n The childminder supports children's emotional well-being really well. She is very

caring and comforts children when they become upset. In turn, children are safe and feel secure in the childminder's care. n Children learn to be kind and courteous. They are polite and take turns. The childminder gives children regular praise and uses successful strategies to promote their positive behaviour. She sets clear rules and reinforces boundaries from an early age. As a result, children's behaviour is consistently good. n Children have a keen interest in the world around them, and they enjoy caring for pretend babies and dolls. The childminder provides children with opportunities to develop their understanding of what they have in common and what makes them unique. As a result, children are respectful and learn to celebrate one another's differences.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder regularly enhances her safeguarding knowledge. She attends frequent training and carries out research to keep herself up to date with any changes. This supports her to identify possible signs of child abuse or neglect. She has a particularly good knowledge of wider safeguarding issues. For example, she knows how to recognise that a child may be at risk of extreme ideas and views. She fully understands the local authority arrangements. As a result, she is confident to accurately record and swiftly report any concerns. This helps to protect children from harm.

p.3

should:

18 September 2019 n implement plans to develop the learning opportunities available in the outdoor area to help elevate the development of children who prefer to play and learn outside to the highest level.
