p.1

The provision is good

The childminder provides children and their families with a warm and friendly welcome. Children settle readily and enjoy using the playroom that the childminder has recently had converted for them. They are happy and comfortable in their surroundings and freely choose the toys and activities they wish to play with.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder knows each child and their family circumstances well. She plans a broad range of activities according to children's interests and needs. The childminder regularly reviews the progress that children are making to ensure that they gain the key skills they require to support them in the future. Children love stories, especially favourite ones, such as 'Hairy, scary party', that they revisit. They point at pictures and eagerly ask questions. The childminder extends learning by asking 'What do you think has happened?' She points to text as she reads so that children begin to learn that this has meaning.

p.2

The provision is good

Children play happily together and understand that sharing is kind. They use good manners and demonstrate that they understand different emotions, for example as they make a 'cross' or 'happy' face.

need to do better?

n Children make good progress and successfully gain the skills to support their future success. The childminder interacts with children well and knows exactly the skills she wants to focus on developing for each of them. The childminder works closely with parents to understand significant events in the children's lives, such as a new sibling or a family trip abroad. This helps her to prepare and support children emotionally and to learn from these experiences. n Accurate assessments by the childminder ensure that her expectations of children are high enough. For example, as children play musical instruments, the childminder encourages them to tap three times. When she observes a child to do this with ease, she extends the challenge to five. For a younger child, she holds their hand and taps while counting to three aloud. n The childminder supports children's literacy skills effectively. She sensitively

focuses on word endings and speaks slowly and clearly to ensure children can hear these before repeating for themselves. Children love action songs and their faces light up as they eagerly join in. n Sensitive care practices promote children's physical and emotional well-being. As the childminder changes their nappy, she talks to them about what she is doing and about the activities they have enjoyed together. Children's dietary needs are fully catered for. n The childminder has carefully considered the learning environment that she provides for children. She has successfully developed the use of low-level

Before children arrive, the childminder sets up larger play equipment that she knows they will be interested in. However, less emphasis is placed on helping children to gain positive messages about diversity during their everyday play in the childminder's home. n The childminder is well organised. She has a wide range of policies and procedures that she shares with parents. All required documentation is well maintained. The childminder helps parents to access their children's entitlement to early education funding. n Partnerships with parents are very positive. They comment particularly about the 'caring and attentive childminder' and say, 'I have confidence my child is well cared for, educated and happy'. They value the loving and trusting relationship that the childminder has with their children and say that they value this

The childminder is able to accurately reflect on the quality of her teaching and provision. She also consults with parents to gain their feedback and responds to what they say.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder understands the different categories of abuse and the potential signs and symptoms that may indicate a child is at risk of harm or neglect. She demonstrates a clear ability to act on any concerns that she identifies about a child's safety or welfare.
