Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The staff spend a lot of time doing activities with children and young people in and out of the home, which helps them to build trusting relationships. The staff help children and young people to see their families and rebuild relationships with them. The staff supervise children and young people very closely, which means that they are not accessing much free time. This does not support their independence in line with their age and development. Specialist help such as substance misuse is available for children and young people and all the referrals are made promptly. Children that are new to the home get a warm welcome. They get a welcome book, with pictures of staff and the home. They get to individualise their bedrooms to make them homelier. When endings for the children and young people are unplanned, the staff continue to keep in touch with them to follow their progress and give them continuity.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The children and young people take part in reviewing their plans and benefit from incentives for positive behaviour, such as time on the games console. They have opportunities to ‘earn back’ lost time if they change their negative behaviours. The children and young people access education and are making progress academically and socially. They earn financial rewards when their attendance and engagement are positive. Children and young people can choose the activities that they take part in, such as going on days out and fun things like go-karting. One young person has been able to participate in the Tough Mudder run with his key worker, raising money for a Down’s syndrome charity. The children and young people have been on short-break holidays and visited places like Fantasy Island.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
The children and young people are safe. The staff follow comprehensive risk assessments and know how to act in response to various behaviours. The staff know what to do if children and young people go missing. They know the signs of child sexual exploitation, county lines and how to keep children and young people safe. The new staff are recruited with careful consideration given to their previous experience of working with children and young people. However, a member of staff has been working on a shadowing shift without a valid Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Although the member of staff was supervised throughout the shift, this could have put the children and young people at risk if the outcome of the check had been negative. Staff have a calm and consistent approach with the children and young people. They have regular key-working sessions, which are done sensitively with regards to children’s

When there have been incidents, they have been managed appropriately and lessons are learned from these. This helps the children and young people to make better choices and understand the dangers they may face. The staff have good links with the local authorities, designated officers in the local community and the education professionals. The manager considers the matching well in respect of children already living at the home and those that are moving in. All health and safety checks in the home are up to date. The home is safe and in good repair, which further reduces the risks for the children and young people.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The manager is enthusiastic and wants the best for the children and young people. She is approachable and has a good knowledge of the children and young people in the home. The staff take real ownership of the home and they get good support from the manager and each other. The staff are committed and want to provide consistency to the children and as a result, at times work many additional hours. This can lead to overtired workers if they continue working excessive hours. Children’s and young people’s records are up to date and of good quality and staff are well informed of any changes. Notifications of any incidents are sent to the regulator appropriately, apart from on one occasion. The manager is proactive at challenging agencies when the response from them does not meet the needs of the children and young people. The staff are in regular contact with other agencies and families in respect of updates

and progress of the children and young people. The feedback from professionals in relation to meeting the needs of the children and young people, communication, the staff, and the management of the home, is very positive. New staff starting at the home receive a comprehensive induction that is relevant to the needs of the children and young people at the home. Team meetings are productive and include discussions about the children and young people. In addition, the staff do team-building and reflective practice exercises such as getting to understand how the young people in care feel. The manager and staff receive regular supervision that focuses on children and young people. It identifies any gaps in training and gives staff an opportunity to reflect on practice and discuss any arising issues. Inspection report children’s home: SC460063 5
