p.1
The provision is good
The childminder has a very calm, gentle approach which helps children to settle quickly. Strong relationships with parents are established quickly from the start. The childminder takes time to talk to parents and gather information about their children. She uses this information to build on the experiences children have at home and plan what children need to learn next.
p.2
The provision is good
The childminder has high expectations of all the children. She calmly and effectively promotes positive behaviour. Children become fully engaged in their play and concentrate for long periods. The childminder narrates what children are doing, which helps to support the concentration and language development of younger children. However, she does not include complex words to help to extend their vocabulary.
p.2
The provision is good
Children build their confidence and independence as they make choices and lead their own play. The childminder gives them time to develop their curiosity and interests. For example, younger children become fascinated with the twist of a glue stick and the sounds and feel of different craft resources. Occasionally the childminder does not ask questions which would allow older children to extend their thinking skills.

need to do better?
n The childminder plans exciting activities which link children's learning across all areas of the curriculum and helps to build on children's knowledge and skills. For example, the childminder and children recently spotted an owl in a tree in the garden. They took photographs and recorded the sound it made. During the inspection, the children created owls with paint and feathers. They then joined in an owl action song. Older children would benefit further by being given opportunities to consider their own answers to questions. n The childminder skilfully adapts the environment, resources and activities to meet the needs of the children. She regularly assesses her provision both outdoors and indoors. For instance, some children were unfamiliar around insects. The childminder and children built a bug house in the garden, which this summer was inhabited by bees. The children are now more relaxed around

insects and take an interest in the natural world. n Children demonstrate good behaviour. They are learning the importance of being kind and sharing. Children seek out ways they can help with everyday jobs and tasks. They enjoy setting the table for lunch and tidy-up time, which is made into an enjoyable game, before moving on to another activity. The childminder encourages children to try to do things for themselves. They quickly develop independence and confidence. For instance, younger children are

The childminder supports the older children to develop patience and understand their feelings. She explains how older children need to help younger children to learn how to share and how to be kind. At Christmas, the children choose toys to buy for the local children's hospice. They visit the hospice to deliver their presents. n The childminder has excellent relationships with the local school and nursery. She supports children effectively when they move on to the next stage of learning. The childminder uses her local knowledge to plan for children to be ready for school. For example, the childminder checked the writing and phonics scheme of the local school to support a child who was ready to read and write their name. n The childminder has attended training and has made changes to the way she

supports children's language development. Children enjoy daily songs, stories and rhymes. They attend storytelling sessions at the local library. The childminder loans books with puppets and props to parents to help support children's learning at home. The childminder recognises that this is an area of continuing development and that introducing more complex words would support children's developing vocabulary.
p.3
Safeguarding
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
p.3
Safeguarding
The childminder has a good understanding of her responsibilities to safeguard and promote children's welfare at all times. She ensures that she and her occasional co- childminder keep their knowledge up to date by attending regular training. The childminder can identify forms of abuse and knows how to follow procedures to report any concerns she may have about children's welfare. She has updated her policies and procedures to reflect changes to local arrangements for safeguarding children.
