Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This is a provision that requires improvement

n Staff do not use the information from children's assessments sufficiently to provide all children with appropriately challenging activities. n The quality of teaching is not consistently good. Staff do not provide a rich enough range of interesting activities that promote children's learning, particularly in their mathematics and understanding of the world. n Staff do not fully consider the needs of the youngest babies during whole-group activities so that they can benefit completely from the experiences. n Systems to involve parents in their children's learning and to obtain their views about the service are not fully developed.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n The leadership team has taken necessary steps to address the actions set at the previous inspection to bring about improvement to the quality of the nursery. n Staff closely monitor children with special educational needs and/or disabilities and provide the tailored support they need to help close any gaps in their learning. n Staff are warm and caring, and children are happy and settled. All children benefit from a key person who is sensitive to their individual care routines. n Staff provide ample opportunities for children to be outdoors in the fresh air and increase their physical fitness.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must: Due date improve the use of information obtained from assessing children's progress, to help staff better plan for children's level of development and provide more challenging activities that support all children to make consistently good progress 14/10/2019

n review the routines and consider the needs of the youngest babies during whole-group activities to help engage them more in their learning n strengthen the systems in place to obtain the views of parents about the service on offer and to involve them in supporting their children's learning at home.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

n The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. n The inspector spoke with staff and children during the inspection. n The inspector completed a joint observation with the manager. n The inspector held a meeting with the manager, deputy and provider. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of staff working at the nursery. n The inspector spoke to parents during the inspection and took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement

The manager and staff have made effective use of the training and support provided by the local authority to ensure the quality of teaching is improving. The management team more actively provides tailored supervision and coaching to staff to help embed new learning and raise the quality of teaching even further. Safeguarding is effective. Thorough risk assessments are carried out to ensure the premises are safe and suitable. All staff have a strong knowledge of child protection and know the procedure to follow if they have a concern about a child. Staff remain enthusiastic and the leadership team has a focused action plan in place to drive improvement forward. Staff obtain useful information about children's care and development when they first start, and update parents about children's progress. However, staff do not consistently involve parents in supporting their children's learning or obtain their views about the service provided.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

Staff routinely observe children and identify their next steps in learning. However, they do not consistently make the most effective use of what they know about children to help them consistently plan challenging activities. Teaching is variable and at times, staff do not help children to become highly involved in their learning. They do not provide experiences to help motivate children to become engaged in mathematics or provide enough opportunities for children to develop their understanding of the world. Nevertheless, staff enjoy the time they spend with children and occasionally when activities are planned well, some children show sustained levels of engagement. Staff demonstrate a good understanding of how to promote children's early writing skills and provide stimulating activities which quickly capture their curiosity. For example, staff introduce a shaving foam activity and help children to make marks in a variety of ways.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Due to weaknesses in planning and teaching, children do not consistently show good levels of involvement in their play. Since the previous inspection, there have been some room changes. New routines have been introduced and children are becoming familiar with them. Overall, staff caring for children under three years manage the mixed-age group well. However, during whole-group activities, such as singing sessions, staff do not consistently engage the youngest babies. Nevertheless, they hold, rock and support babies well to meet their individual care needs. Children are happy, settled and form strong bonds with staff, who place a clear focus on settling new children. They teach children to keep themselves safe and to respect the environment and each other. Children's health is promoted well as they learn about the benefits of a healthy diet.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children do not make consistently good levels of progress from their starting points, particularly in their mathematics and understanding of the world, in preparation for school. Nevertheless, children develop their independence, learn to share and play well alongside others. They enjoy conversations with staff and like to talk about their experiences and interests. Children show a real fondness for making marks as they busily paint large pebbles and enjoy exploring a range of natural materials.
