p.2

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Staff are highly motivated and can confidently demonstrate the positive impact that staying at this home is having on children’s care and development.

p.2

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Staff have an in-depth understanding of children’s complex needs. They develop positive relationships with them and their families. They skilfully meet children’s healthcare needs while successfully providing opportunities to increase children’s independence and social opportunities. Inspection report children’s home: 2484626 3 Children enjoy visiting for short breaks, and parents can relax in the knowledge that their child is expertly cared for. Children participate in a range of fun and personalised activities and enjoy spending time with friends in the home.

p.2

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Staff also support children to go out into the local community. However, opportunities to take children further afield are limited because the service does not have specialist transport. This means that children’s opportunities to develop their confidence and social skills further are reduced.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Staff promote the safety and well-being of children. Their induction, training and supervision sessions equip them with a robust understanding of safeguarding policies and procedures.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Since registration, there have been no complaints from children, parents or professionals. There have been no significant safeguarding incidents. There have been no physical restraints or sanctions. Staff ensure that the focus of children’s stays is enjoying activities, achieving new goals and having fun.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

There are clear staff vetting procedures which ensure that children are supported by appropriate staff. However, the system for ensuring that the registered manager has oversight of the checks for agency staff is not well established. The registered manager was able to collate the information and evidence that children are safeguarded, but this procedure needs to be reviewed and embedded.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

The staff team works hard to ensure that the home is well maintained. The environment is very safe and secure. Risk assessments are of a very high standard and are regularly reviewed. This ensures that children are kept safe.

p.3

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The registered manager and the staff team are consistent, highly experienced and skilled. There is always a qualified nurse on duty who leads each shift. All the staff are passionate about providing the highest level of care for each child.

p.3

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

All qualified nursing staff receive regular, high-quality supervision. However, some other staff are not receiving regular supervisions and are therefore not benefiting from the same professional development. All staff receive yearly appraisals. New staff praise the welcome that they receive from the staff team and the support provided throughout their induction and probation period. The registered manager ensures that all staff are up to date with mandatory training, and additional specialist training is provided on relevant subjects, to increase staff knowledge.

p.3

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The registered manager has completed a very well-evaluated review of the quality of care that the home provides. She is aware of the strengths and weaknesses of the service and is able to demonstrate areas where improvement has taken place to ensure Inspection report children’s home: 2484626 4 that children continue to receive high-quality care. The independent visitor’s monthly visits and reports feed into this process but are not consistently being sent to Ofsted.

p.3

Information about this inspection

Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the differences made to the lives of children and young people. They watched how professional staff work with children and young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care provided. Wherever possible, they talked to children and young people and their families. In addition, the inspectors have tried to understand what the children’s home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people whom it is trying to help, protect and look after.
